im currently planning on repurposing my windows machine plugged into my main tv that serves media to other tvs phone tablet etc to a linux server in a cupboard out of sight.

i have 2 e series samsung tvs, so 2012 models, that are running the emby app, its not the polished version on windows but im delighted emby is still running, (no other useful apps do at this stage)

im going to use these tvs until they die but im going to be losing the web browser for sports streaming etc, so thinking a pi with kodi and the emby app.

Is a pi5 necessary? is the fan loud? is the emby app on kodi ok to use? if the linux app turns out ok in a while i could put a version of ubuntu or something on there,  any thoughts, maybe i should be aiming at a firestick, but im trying to de-big tech my life a bit.

You'd be better off buying an offlease micro PC than a Pi 5 or even a new N100 or N150 micro PC. The Pi 5 is an overpriced machine for what it offers. A full kit with case and sd card is about $130 USD, where as an offlease i3-8100T/Ryzen 5 2400G(E) machine can be bought for $100 or less.
