Emby Portable

Is it possible to run both the portable and the regular versions on the same machine? I know they both install but when I open the portable version it is picking up my regular setup. Each program is in a different drive so I cannot understand why the portable version is picking up the same libraries.

Thank you...

What do you mean by that?

It certainly is, I'd guess number of users are running them in parallel, stable + beta. Personally, I usually have 3-4 server instances running for troubleshooting purposes.

Can you elaborate on that?

Just need to set them up on different ports.

@GrimReaper By "I know they both install" I mean that I know both or many instances can be installed on the same machine.

"Each program is in a different drive so I cannot understand why the portable version is picking up the same libraries." One instance is on drive D and the other instance is on drive G however the instance on drive G (portable) is somehow connecting to the libraries on drive D (full application).

@Happy2PlayThat is the solution I was hoping to find. Gonna give it a try now.

Cheers to both of you.

There's no "install" for portable version, you just run .exe from wherever you placed the extracted server folder. As it'll initially default to same ports (8096/8920), you'd need to shut down your original instance, start portable one and change ports. Restart both instances.

@GrimReaperWell thank you but I being an English major, "install" has several meanings in the English language and the use of that word in my initial request is proper. But, thank you anyway.

Install does have several meanings but in the context of software "install" generally refers to a state in which the operating system is aware of and can manage a specific set of files related to an application delivered through a known method, therefore you do not "install" a portable software package, it doesn't add any of the entries necessary for the OS to be aware of its existence. Either way, yes both the delivered installation as well as the portable installation use the same ports by default so you would need to stop and start them accordingly until you reconfigure the ports for one of the instances so they can run independently of each other - you can use the same credentials for both of course, but a second instance can't request for a port that's already in use.

How exactly did you install portable?

Posted

@Luke Thanks for the response, Luke. I just followed the given instructions under the heading "Portable Installation". I have installed the portable version before but never jointly on the same rig as the full version. So, this was a first for me which gave me an unexpected result. @Happy2Playhad the solution and everything is grand now.

As for the rest of you, having served 22 years in the military and traveling all around the globe gave me an education I can never repay.  Stationed at RAF Wittering as a TDY, I had the opportunity to study at Cambridge. So, I would say to those who profess their mastering of the English language, get a new dictionary. Obviously, some people at Emby studied the correct version or at least one which was written by an English Scholar. Cheers!!!
