Feature Request: Support for .avif Image Format in Music Metadata and Artwork

Dear Emby Team,

First of all, thank you for your continued hard work and dedication to making Emby such a powerful and enjoyable media platform.

I’d like to suggest a feature request regarding support for the .avif image format. Specifically, it would be great if Emby could support .avif images used in:

  • Embedded artwork in music files (e.g., MP3, FLAC, etc.)

  • External metadata images such as banners, fanart, posters, and thumbnails

The AVIF format offers excellent compression efficiency and image quality, making it a great choice for media libraries that aim to reduce storage space without sacrificing visual fidelity.

As the format gains popularity, adding AVIF support would help future-proof Emby and provide users with more flexibility in managing their media collections.

Thank you for considering this request – and for all the great work you’re doing with Emby!

Best regards
Renvan

Hi, this should already be supported.

Thanks for your fast answer. I cannot upload .avif pictures. I am using Version 4.9.0.42 beta on a Synology S223j.  The only formats i am able to are png, jfif, pjpeg, jpeg, pjp and jpg.
Am I doing something wrong? If i switch to all datatypes and try to upload an .avif file nothing happens.

OK haven’t tested that but if they’re in your directories then they should already be recognized.

But is this about embedded images within audio files or standalone avif images?  Will have to test using as Emby artwork though.

The idea was about embedded images in flac files  for better compression and saving space since I have tons of high resolutions covers and background images for the artists.

Had no issue with backdrops will have to test embedding a image into a test track unless you can provide one that is not working.

From an embedded standpoint it doesn't look like mp3tag or Picard support embedding avif images.
