ASS subtitles no longer showing after updating to 1.9.8

Hi!

Yesterday the validity period was expired, so I've updated the Emby client to the latest (1.9.8) on my Samsung UE65RU7102KXXH (SW: T-MSLDEUC-1500.9) TV, and the ASS subtitles, that were properly showing earlier, now have disappeared. The subtitles are displayed properly in the browser, and other subtitles are working on the client too. On the sidenote: the client was struggling to load any ASS subtitle before the update, took ~5-15 seconds on avarage, but that might just be due to my TV being on the lower-end of the performance spectrum.   @SamES

The Emby server I'm running is 4.8.11.0.

Sorry about the tag, it was a copypasta error, and can't edit the post.

Actually I did that.

Yes, this slow loading time is typical on older TV's and can take up to 40 seconds - it's due to the TV having minimal processing power to process the ASS handler which is fairly complex.

If you wait at least 60 seconds after playback start, do subtitles still not work?

Can you try turning subtitles off during playback, then turning them back on during playback and waiting up to 60 seconds?  Do they start now?

Made sure my test is reliable, so I've waited a tad more than the requested 60 seconds.

Here is what I just did:

  1. Started the playback
  2. Waited for 5 minutes without changing anything - subtitles weren't showing
  3. Turned subtitles off, turned it on again
  4. Waited for 5 minutes - subtitles are still not showing

I know that this wasn't the result you were hoping for, sorry 😬

Can you possible send me a PM with a link so that I can download this file to test?

Can you also turn on debug logging and do another short test ~1-2 minutes then also provide me with a copy of server logs for that time?  Thanks

For the time it takes to load ASS subtitles, try having the subtitles external and not embedded in the file.

New versions sometimes have these things happen. I'm stuck on 1.9.2, and for now, I won't update until I need it.

I've attached the log you've requested.

I'm sorry, but I cannot share the file due to many reasons, one of them being is that it would take me hours to upload even at full bandwidth (thank you asynchronous internet connection), which I really can't afford since I'm working from this connection.

Hope this helps!

Thanks.  I think I might have been able to reproduce this on 2019 models

Hi, please try 1.9.9 and let us know if this resolves it for you. Thanks.

Sorry to inform you, but the issue wasn't resolved by the new version.

However the UI is broken, see attached screenshot.

Do settings screens look normal?

Yep, settings look okay. Login is also fine. Only the screens where you start the playback (as seen on the attached photo) seem to be broken.

OK please try the 2.0.0 update and let me know if this resolves the UI. We are still looking at the subtitle problem. Thanks.

The UI is back to normal with the 2.0.0 update.

Strange, it was working for me after this fix.  Did you wait for up to a minute?

What language is the ASS supposed to display?

Have you tried a few different files with ASS?

Is this file using DirectPlay?  Can you attach any logs from your test?

Can you post the full media info for this file from the bottom of the details screen on the server?

Answers in order:

  • Yes, I did wait, more than a minute. Switched subtitle off, then on, waited again.
  • The language of the subtitle is hungarian.
  • Haven't had the time to try with other content, will get to it once I have some more time. However, the subtitle for the content I'm trying to watch worked before the update.
  • I'm using direct play.

The rest is attached to this post.

Update: left the show on emby paused for more than 10 minutes, while I was writing my previous answer, and the subtitle appeared.

I think, that it's safe to conclude, that my TV's performance is only slightly better than of a regular toasters, so as far as I'm concerned, you guys fixed the issue, and I need to get a new TV in the foreseeable future.

You people are awesome to be honest, your work is very much appreciated! Now I feel inclined to buy the Lifetime package 😅

Hope that I did not cause yous too much of a headache with this issue!

Sincerely,

someone who also fixes pesky bugs like this on a daily basis
