michaelbhunter 0 Posted March 16, 2025 Posted March 16, 2025 I've read through many guides and I keep finding outdated information on all of them. I first looked at the port forwarding guide but I noticed google domains was bought by squarespace. I thought this was fine until I get to the dynamic DNS part. Squarespace does not support dynamicDNS. I think look at reverse proxy guides but they all require me to install windows server and have a permanent public IP which I do not. Is there any guides out there that are up to date on where to get a domain that works with dynamicDNS? Is there a reverse proxy guide that doesn't require me to have a static Public IP? I would prefer to have a guide that also enables me to automatically renew the SSL cert. Thanks!

Thus, the general internet is probably the best source for that information. Many of the "guides" posted out here are community contributors who are giving examples of how they setup these things in their environment at that time. They can, indeed, become stale on a specific level but should still help with the basics. I believe many of our users use Tailscale in the situation you are in. 1
darkassassin07 652 Posted March 16, 2025 Posted March 16, 2025 Unfortunately when squarespace bought google domains, they dropped support for ddns. Cloudflare however does support ddns, and you can use their nameservers for free even with squarespace domains. (or a domain from another registrar as long as they allow you to specify custom nameservers) https://developers.cloudflare.com/dns/zone-setups/full-setup/setup/ From there, I use DDClient to keep that ddns record up to date, and ACME.sh to acquire ssl certificates via DNS-01 verification (verification using dns records instead of a web server).

Thank you but this looks like it is linux based. I am running it on windows.
Q-Droid 989 Posted March 16, 2025 Posted March 16, 2025 Like @ebr says these are generic networking options and features and not specific to Emby. This is not a guide but starting points for you to research and find a fit for your needs. Free DDNS - Almost any will do but some require a periodic site/control panel login to remain active. Dynu.com doesn't. DDNS Client - some routers have this built-in for a variety of services. Check to see what yours might support. If not the router then a Windows based DDNS client can do the same but it needs to be "always on" to work reliably. Some DDNS providers offer a client, others depend on generic ones like DDClient. Another option is DNS-O-Matic which can work with a DDNS client as a proxy/hub for IP updates of one or multiple DNS providers, free or paid. It's also good for DNS/DDNS providers that have a complicated API or lack clients to update records. Reverse proxies - Generally the public IP is optional for the configuration and changes should be transparent. If you want to add restrictions and/or filters using the domain name is better. TLS/SSL - The easiest way to automate this is combined with a web server/reverse proxy such as Caddy which is also one of the simplest to setup.
