Missing NFO files for some titles all of a sudden

For whatever reason I've recently noticed some of my titles are missing NFO files, also a lot of my existing media is also now missing images and metadata all of a sudden. I had a look and somehow "save NFO in media folders" became unchecked, so I think the missing NFO is limited to just titles that were added after that setting was disabled.

I've since re-enabled "save NFO in media folders"; what would be the best course of action to populate those files into all of my media folders as well as restore my images/etc?

The missing images, etc. are still in the actual media folders in question, but no longer showing up in Emby.

It seems to add the missing NFO files I'd either have to go through each title one-by-one and weed out the ones with missing NFO files and manually refresh their metadata, or refresh ALL metadata on my library, which seems like it would take forever, and likely mess up some titles if I've manually edited their metadata (I know I've edited a lot of genres, etc.).

Neither of these options seems ideal; is there another option I haven't mentioned?

I'm not sure what's caused this library issue in the first place. I'm thinking it might have been from my NAS going down temporarily a little while ago while the server running my Emby container was still running.

I'm thinking about disabling all metadata providers temporarily and performing a library scan to see if it clears up the missing images issue; if this is successful, that still leaves me with the missing NFO files issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi, I would start with the library scan to see if it helps with the images.

The nfo files will require refreshing metadata. Or you could just leave it alone and not worry about it and let them get created over time.

I've never done a full metadata refresh before; I'm assuming this would be an extremely long process?

Does this apply to existing library items without NFO files? Or just new items added in the future? ie: will existing items eventually have NFO files added to their folders over time?

New ones should get it immediately.

And existing ones without NFO files?

Didn’t I give you your two options here?

Sorry, I was just trying to clarify whether or not you meant over time NFO files would be automatically created for existing media, or if they'll just be created for new media as it's added.

No problem at all.

Still trying to clarify...

Just looking for a simple "Yes, NFO files for existing media will be automatically created over time" or "No, NFO files for existing media will not be created over time, and will require a manual metadata refresh".

Probably. It just depends on what features you have enabled. But between the built-in features and all of the plugins available, most users have at least one or two things that will cause metadata refreshes from time to time. Definitely yes anytime you use the metadata editor and click save.

@Luke, I've rescanned my libraries and manually refreshed metadata/images for movies that lost their info for whatever reason, but I still have a lot of episodes (I believe it's limited to ones that were added fairly recently) that don't have any metadata.

I've tried multiple times to manually refresh their metadata and selected "replace missing" and "refresh all", but these episodes still just have the filename set as the title, and no other metadata.

What would you suggest?

I believe it's constrained to media that doesn't have any NFO files; for some shows I might have the first few episodes with NFO files showing proper metadata, then a few episodes with no NFO file or metadata, and then then latest couple episodes have NFO/metadata.

No amount of refreshing/scanning seems to do anything for the affected titles.
