When I pause or play using the space bar, Emby makes a dinging noise. This seems to be new; I've never noticed it before, though it doesn't happen when I play or pause by clicking the mouse so it may just not have come up.

I can find no way to disable this infernal noise. Am I missing something, or is it just not an option?

TV or Desktop mode?

Desktop.

I haven't updated my computer this year, but even if I had I see no way a bug that causes no audio to play could possibly cause a specific sound to play while having no effect on anything else.

Windows updates by itself, often without you being notified.  There are settings options that adjust this type of background updating.  Windows sometimes has odd sounds associated with specific events that you might not see anywhere else.  The same applies to Mac OS, not so much with Linux.  The audio event is very often an OS issue.  Open up your sound controls and see if you can find the audio in the list of optional settings.

Sorry for the inconvenience. You need to switch to TV mode, then you'll see the sounds setting under "Display". Turn it off and switch back to Desktop mode.

Why is that setting not exposed in desktop mode?

For the Windows app a new "Windows Theme" was developed with the goal to fully implement the latest applicaton design guidelines for Windows, including UI audio feedback. As you can see, there's a new sound scheme in the dropdown which corresponds to the Windows theme.
Normally, sounds are available in TV mode only. For the Windows app, this restriction was relaxed, but it was decided not to enable it by default. After that it simply became forgotten to make the selection visible in non-TV mode. After all the beta months and the months since public release you are the first one to report about it.

It will be fixed of course in a future update. Thanks.

Well I've never turned it on, so it appears that's an issue too.

I have switched between desktop and TV mode a few times for the purpose of taking screenshots comparing the two layouts, so perhaps that led to the sounds being enabled?

I can't say why it happened in your case, but if it was a general issue, I'm sure it would have been reported by others already.

If they're enabled in TV mode by default, then I assume entering TV mode enabled them and they didn't disable themselves when I switched back to Desktop mode.

Switching back and forth between the two probably isn't all that common.

No, they're not self-enabling in TV mode. The setting value is only ever changed by user action.
Normally, sounds don't play in desktop mode even when a sound schema is selected.

I'm not seeing it under "Display," but I am seeing "Sound effects" under "General." It's set to "Disabled," though.

The sounds are gone after switching back to Desktop. Weird.

Now you're no longer talkin about the Windows app, right?

Still the Windows app.

The Windows app doesn't have a "General" section in settings:

Are there two Windows apps?

Not now, not officially.  The old store app has been replaced by a completely new app which is the replacement for both the old store app and the old desktop app, and should be more capable than either.  The old desktop app can still be downloaded from somewhere in Github for the time being.

The main nuisance of the new app is that it takes much longer to start up then the old ones.

Oh my, no! Without the ability to use an mpv.conf and easily replace the library, the new app is far inferior to the desktop app. The UI is better and that's about it. You guys are being deprived of a massive amount of options. It's also way behind in player development. So much, that I've once again abandoned the emby app.

So Emby Theater isn't supported anymore? That's what I'm using.

Correct - though it hasn't had an update since May 2024 anyway.

The new one works just as well for me, though a few people have niggles which are being discussed/worked on.

I had no idea that had happened.

You can install the new one from the store without uninstalling the old Desktop one; so it's no problem to check it out and see if it works for you.
