Question about the conversion feature

I've started to realize the use cases where that might be useful...couple quick questions:

Does it follow the transcoder preferences the same as streaming? i.e. will it use the hardware encoder to do conversions, or does it only do software? I remember trying a similar feature on Plex years ago, and it would only use the software encoder there. I don't want to hammer the CPU with software encodes.
