Can I just rename .ts files to .mpg files and suffer no consequences

I have HDHomeRun DVR files with .mpg extension. Many years of files and now with Emby DVR, I see they are .ts files.

For consistency, and searching by extension, can I just take the new .ts files and rename the extension to .mpg and see no video quality issues or any issues at all?

I know they play with the extension changed. Just wondered if there were any potential problems in changing the extension.

Odds are the ts file may need a complete remux as there are so many topics with issues with ts files and usually indexing.  But just renaming could have header issues.
