Childs Roku TV missing Emby Premiere

I have Roku TVs for my children. As they are minors they do not get access to the internet via their TVs. Roku also has very poor options for child safety online and a scant concept of the illegality of mining telemetry from children.

I only worked it out today when access to the live TV feature was removed from their Roku TV Emby app as "non licensed" that both Emby server itself but also the client need to call home regularly. This was not expected behavior.

I have two hopefully easy questions:

  1. Is the license server https://mb3admin.com I would be looking to punch a hole to allow just this.
  2. Is anything other than a license check sent. Ideally I would like to see the statement on telemetry and Emby child protections if someone can point me to it.

Yes.

The back end will collect a device ID, an app name (i.e. Roku SG) and version and the Premiere key in use on the server.  No personal data is sent.

Thanks for the reply.

It looks like you operate more than just a license server on this IP

  • connect.emby.media [173.230.139.54]
  • mb3admin.com [173.230.139.54]
  •  www.emby.media [173.230.139.54]
  •  emby.media [173.230.139.54]
  • ... and many more

which unfortunately means for anyone that is following this a simple IP ACL will not be enough. To limit access to just the license server a HTTP proxy will be required.

Team Emby please consider splitting the license server off so that it and only it can be allowed as minimum viable access.
