How To Choose External Player For Live TV

I can set this option in the settings for Live TV, but when selecting a channel it just says, "Cannot play this video format". How do I choose what external player I want to use if the choice of external player menu does not popup like in the Android version? I have tried setting up a new user from scratch and received the same resulting message. Thanks in advance!

What external players do you have installed on the device?

The Android system decides what is available based on the content being played.  That message indicates you have no players installed that can play the content.

Also, why do you feel you need an external player?

I have both VLC and MX Player. They both function via the Android APP for movies and television. The Television channels are OTA from an HDHomerun Tuner. I prefer the Android TV APP because to me it looks nicer. As for why I would like to use an external player for television, well, I have one channel that we use for local news and it has a weaker signal so it has a tendency to occasionally show artifacts on the screen when the signal drops. The HDHomerun App works fine. It just shows the artifacts and continues to play the channel. Both Emby APPS hang and then I have to back out to the guide and reselect the channel to get it to play again. I have since tested the the Android version of Emby with VLC and MX Player. They too works fine and deal with signal loss without hanging. I was hoping to use the Television APP like this as well as I like the looks of it better and it is easier to exit from. Thanks for your help on this.

Hi, what looks nicer to you about it?

The guide view. The Guide icon on the home page does not match the other content icons. The movie and other content icons seem vertically squished down in height. Everything in general seems compressed down in size. I know I am being picky but you asked. I have played with sizing quite a bit So, any thoughts on how to get the Television APP  to allow me to choose an external player?

What do you mean by the guide icon does not match the other content icons?

I changed my theme and now I see that it is the same size. My background color was the same color as the icon's background. This is just fine.

So, I am trying to shift over to using the Android APP and discovered that there is no individual settings for external players. It is on or off for both Movies and Television. I like the internal player for movies for the pause/resume functionality, and just want to set the television for external to prevents hangs do to signal quality issues.

HI, currently it is all or nothing in regards to external players, but yes it is certainly possible to expand on those options.
