Emby Server Fails to See UNAS Pro Shares

Hey everyone,

I was extremely excited to move my files over to my new Ubiquiti UNAS Pro, but after setting up my shared drives and testing them on my Windows 11 unit, I was unable to connect through the Emby server.

I've checked a ton of forum posts about samba shares and file access but all attempts were to no avail. For reference I am running the EmbyServer / embytray setup as opposed to Emby as a Service.

My only thought would be that the samba share is accessed by the "Connect using different credentials option", where I then pass credentials stored in the NAS:

The Emby Log Provides the following message:

Quote

2025-02-06 20:02:49.960 Error Server: Error processing request
    *** Error Report ***
    Version: 4.8.10.0

    Framework: .NET 6.0.33
    OS/Process: x64/x64
    Runtime: C:/Program Files/emby/System.Private.CoreLib.dll
    Processor count: 12
    Data path: C:\Program Files\programdata
    Application path: C:\Program Files\emby

    Source: Emby.Api
    TargetSite: Void MoveNext()

Obviously the main concern here is "Directory not found: \\14.27.0.253".

As you can see in the following screenshots, I am able to connect directly through Windows Explorer no problem:

Have you tried manually typing full path for particular library, i.e. \\14.27.0.253\Emby\Movies?

Edit: Disregard, checked your log.

Hi, that is the server. Try typing in the network share, e.g. \\ip\emby

Hey so I got frustrated and took a break from the setup - I restarted the NAS, Server, and EmbyServer numerous times with no luck.

I ended up testing Jellyfin (which is just a fork of Emby) with no intention of actually switching and noticed the connection worked immediately.

Afterwards I restarted Emby and thus - the connection began to work.

I believe the logs show I tried \\ip\Emby, as well as the directories like \\ip\Emby\Movies as well - although when it worked it was first try just typing in the UNC path as I had before.

Thanks for taking time to look at this and I hope no one else has trouble with their setups : )

NOTE: Now that everything is working... I'm LOVING this Ubiquiti UNAS Pro + Emby setup - would recommend to anyone who comes across this post in the future!

Am I correct in that the Ubiquiti UNAS cannot be the Emby server, just a repository of the media files?  Something else has to be the server, correct?  I have had some issues with my current Synology 1819+  so was considering the move, but wanted it to be an all in one server and media repository.

Can the Ubiquiti UNAS run software? What OS does it use?

That I am not sure..  dont own one yet..  but seems like everyone I see talks about using a separate Emby server,  so I assume its not running an OS that can run an app  (?)

@tonym123099 can you comment?

Looks like it's just file storage only:

Ubiquiti UNAS (UniFi Drive) is designed exclusively for storage management within the UniFi OS ecosystem and does not support third-party apps, Docker, or VMs.

Got it..  soo....  I have been using EMBY for a long time now, and 85% + of that time has been on synology.  I am considering moving off of Synology for a few reasons, none of which have anything to do with Emby..  but Luke in your opinion, what is the "best" platform for Emby?  As in best performing, most up to date with feature parity, stable, etc?  Right now I have high interest in moving to hosting Emby on an always on M4 Mac Mini with a new  UNAS as the storage backend over a 1gbe or maybe 2.5 gbe network (not sure if that network really even makes much of a difference for this use case).  Just wanted to get your opinion.  My endpoint clients will usually be Nvidia Shields and waiting for the next gen Apple TV 4k to come out and will likely move everything over to that.  Pretty rare to need transcoding, but nice to have a fast backend like the Mac vs the weak processors in the Synology.  Thoughts?

The best OS to run Emby on is the one which you are most competent to manage.

Facilities and performance are consistent across platforms, I believe, given comparable hardware.  I believe that historically Windows was the initial and main platform, but I think the devs would not wish to emphasise that now.  Most opinions strongly suggesting one specific platform are probably biased rather than considered.

Thanks.  Despite having a Synology for a long time I would say I dont know or like the interface all that much, even though its just a gui.  Lots of capabilities that I dont really use or need, so moving the "brain". part of Emby over to a Mac Mini could be a great fit.
