uzio123 2 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 Hi all, Just to flag here early on, I am a bit of a noob, so appreciate any help I could get! After years of my setup working flawlessly – Emby will no longer launch on my machine – it doesn’t show in the system tray or anything. Tried restarting my system/running as admin, all those basic things and nothing. Coincidentally, my setup hasn’t worked since I downloaded the backup/restore plugin and tried downloading a backup. I have tried going in to the plugin folder and deleted this (I think) but still nothing. I look at program data > logs and this is all it shows: “2025-01-31 14:04:41.268 Info Main: Application path: C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\system\EmbyServer.dll 2025-01-31 14:04:41.485 Info Main: Shutdown complete” Cheers.
uzio123 2 Posted January 31, 2025 Author Posted January 31, 2025 To add, I just tried reinstalling Emby and nothing - the log creates the same notes.
Neminem 1519 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 What version of Emby. 4.8 or 4.9 ? If 4.9 it sounds like
uzio123 2 Posted January 31, 2025 Author Posted January 31, 2025 I'm not sure of the version tbh, I can't even get in and check. I never scheduled any backups or anything manually - just downloaded the plugin.

Sure, most recent ones have just been the text I mentioned OP - but uploading the 2 before they were all the same as that now. embyserver-63873735368.txt embyserver-63873735401.txt embyserver-63873735380.txt
Neminem 1519 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 Ok it looks like you are using 4.7 So I would not expect it has anything to do with the backup plugin. Out of curiosity can you see this file here C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\updates\embyserver-win-x64-{version}.7z Not sure if your restart of Emby started a Emby update. You will have to wait for a dev to answer.
Neminem 1519 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 @Happy2Playdo you have any insight in this issue ?

Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 Looking at the server log it would appear to have permisions issues but have never run into them on Windows but don't use user accounts either. Access to the path 'C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\data\wan.dat' is denied. Access to the path 'C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\plugins\Emby.Dlna.dll' is denied. Access to the path 'C:\Users\Default User' is denied. Then library issues The specified network name is no longer available. So are you sure Emby is running in the correct user context? Is there a reason you are still on 4.7?
Neminem 1519 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 I'm not sure if we can just move it away from that dir. And then try starting Emby server again. I do not want to break everything for you as I'm not sure if that will break it completely or make the day.

I'm not too sure about user context, all I know i'ts been working fine for ages and then I downloaded that plugin and it's gone kaput! Literally never had any issues with library etc... No idea why I'm on 4.7 - a mix of laziness and not realising perhaps!

Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 Not sure as the logs you provided show 4.8.10.0 was downloaded and updated so we need to see the next log. 2025-01-28 21:06:52.610 Info HttpClient: GetTempFileResponse url: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases/download/4.8.10.0/embyserver-win-x64-4.8.10.0.7z 2025-01-28 21:06:52.610 Info HttpClient: GET https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases/download/4.8.10.0/embyserver-win-x64-4.8.10.0.7z 2025-01-28 21:06:53.900 Info HttpClient: GetTempFileResponse url: https://embydata.com/admin/service/packageFiles/Emby.Dlna.dll_1.3.5.exe 2025-01-28 21:06:53.900 Info HttpClient: GET https://embydata.com/admin/service/packageFiles/Emby.Dlna.dll_1.3.5.exe Update happened 2025-01-29 08:16:18.784 Info Main: Application path: C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\system\EmbyServer.dll 2025-01-29 08:16:18.789 Info Main: An update is available from C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\updates\embyserver-win-x64-{version}.7z 2025-01-29 08:16:18.792 Info Main: Copying updater to temporary location 2025-01-29 08:16:20.559 Info Main: C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\emby-server-updater\Emby.Server.Updater "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\updates\embyserver-win-x64-{version}.7z" "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\system" "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\cache\temp\f39514a4-9bb0-44d6-80fb-64f8c4b052b4" "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\logs" 2025-01-29 08:16:20.610 Info Main: Exiting to perform application update.
uzio123 2 Posted January 31, 2025 Author Posted January 31, 2025 Clicked through all the logs and pretty much each of them has the same thing as below on them: “2025-01-31 14:04:41.268 Info Main: Application path: C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\system\EmbyServer.dll 2025-01-31 14:04:41.485 Info Main: Shutdown complete” Thanks for looking at this btw

But sounds like something went really wrong with the migration or didn't happen. I really hope you have backups. I guess you can rename/delete the system folder and rename the system.old folder back to system to revert to previous version but if the database have done any updates I am affaid they will not be compatible with previous versions. 1

Yes, that's all I get. No backups I don't think - that's what I was trying to do when I downloaded the plugin If I have to start from scratch, so be it. But when I try and install Emby again, nothing happens i.e. I still get that in my log.... So not entirely sure on how to get an install working.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 Go to Application path: C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\ and you should see a system and system.old folder. Delete/rename the system folder as that should be the 4.8.10.0 update, rename the system.old to system and this will revert you back to 4.7.14.0. And hopefully databases were not migrated and will launch normally.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 (edited) Looking at the server log I will assume you have database backups per the old legacy backup system. Or at least users/userdata. 2025-01-29 08:08:41.688 Info TaskManager: Daily trigger for Configuration Backup set to fire at 01/30/2025 00:10:00, which is 961.305187405 minutes from now. Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 And by chance is Embyserver still showing in Taskmanager? Have you restarted the host system?
uzio123 2 Posted January 31, 2025 Author Posted January 31, 2025 Not showing in task manager and I've restarted multiple times. What's the most effective way to wipe any trace of it and start from the beginning?
Happy2Play 9780 Posted January 31, 2025 Posted January 31, 2025 Well all depends as uninstalling should ask you if you want to remove all traces. Otherwise you would rename or delete C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\ and reinstall.
uzio123 2 Posted January 31, 2025 Author Posted January 31, 2025 Ok, I will probably look to uninstall in the next few hours and reinstall over the weekend barring a miracle. Thanks again for your help!
