Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 Damn I hate forums. Full of technical jargon, and they never address the issue I have. And since they're usually run by third parties, I don't know if the question will ever get to the creators. I'm having problems with my password. First - and this is common with too many sites - the password is hidden FROM ME
Gilgamesh_48 1240 Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 So ask a direct question providing all the details asked for in the post at the top of the forums about "How to report a problem" and give all the details you can. I will assure you that this forum is not run by "third parties" and the developers are directly involved here. But you must provide enough details so they can answer in helpful ways. Also I strongly suggest that starting off with a phrase like "Damn I hate forums." is not a good way to get good polite responses. 1
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 I tried to put in more details, but the damn thing kicked me out. This is my entire post: Damn I hate forums. Full of technical jargon, and they never address the issue I have. And since they're usually run by third parties, I don't know if the question will ever get to the creators. Furthermore, I have to periodically revisit the Forum page to see if anybody has even read my message, much less addressed it. Who has the time and patience for that? I'm having the problem now, so I want a solution now, not a month from now. Forums give the illusion of customer service, without actually having to deal with, ewww, customers. The issue at hand: I'm having problems with my password. First - and this is common with too many sites - the password is hidden from me as I type it. How do I know if I'm typing in the correct characters, if I can't see them? Oh, I know the excuse - "password security". BS. Security is my thing to deal with. I'm the only person in the house; who else is gonna see it? At least let me peek at it so I can confirm I typed it in right. But even when I'm confident that I typed it in correctly, it's not accepted sometimes, especially on a new device. I installed the program last night, and I've run into this several times already. Also, the first time I tried to play a video on my Android tablet, I got a message that I need to install an app for DVD folder support. Okay. So, I went searching for that on the Emby site. Easier to find the pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow, being guarded by a unicorn. I never did find it, so now I have to re-rip my DVDs into the MKV format. Thanks, guys. Furthermore, those videos played just fine on my PC. So what's the deal? I don't want to sit at my computer to watch videos. I downloaded Emby, Jellyfin and Plex. Emby is the only one of the three that worked (more or less) straight up after setup. But your customer support framework is geared toward the nerds and geeks and eggheads in the audience, and not Joe User, who has only enough computer knowledge to reboot the computer. If you want real live people to use the app, get real live people answering real live questions from the users. Please. Now, how do I post this?
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 I tried to login again on my tablet, and it doesn't recognize my password. Is there a problem with your password system? This is very frustrating. When i try to log in via Cliff-Desktop, it tells me "We're unable to connect to the selected server tight now. Please ensure it is running and try again." Well, at least you used the right version of "ensure;" but I'm typing this on my PC. I never turn it off, so that I have remote access. Why does Emby think otherwise? And if I trey Sign in with Emby Connect, guess what? Doesn't recognize my password. This is very frustrating.
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 Well, then go to chat, like it's the 21st century or something. And use real people, who can solve real problems from real people, unlike robots. I changed my password, since Emby didn't like my existing one, but I still can't get in. Tablet or PC. What do I have to sacrifice, and to which deity?
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 I changed my password. Again. My tablet is apparently logged in under the previous password, because it will play videos, and didn't ask for login. But my teevee still won't recognize my password (and I can only assume that I'm typing it in correctly). And it's been 47 minutes since I got my one and only response to this issue - which is one reason why I hate forums. We're not all eggheads stuck in the 20th century here. Most of us are just users, trying to get the program work as intended. We want real-time responses.
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 So why does it feel like I'm being ignored? 'Bout ready to uninstall this app. Guess I'm not computer-literate enough to matter to these guys. This is why I started this conversation with the phrase, "Damn, I hate forums"! You call it being impolite; I call it being ignored and dismissed because I don't fit in with the crowd. I'm only being as polite as you guys are - if not more so. Don't like my attitude? Then pay attention to me! That's all I want. Oh, and by the way, Gilgamesh_48, I started at "How to report a problem," but I didn't see anything that told me exactly how to report a problem, especially if it doesn't fit into one of your rigid categories.
pwhodges 2012 Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 Not everyone shares your 21st century entitled impatience; to be blunt - it will put some people (but hopefully not the developers) off. This forum is the support channel for Emby. The developers and other support staff are here and will try to help. Other users will commonly chip in to help reduce the load on the devs. Note that Emby is not a large company like Plex (to pick a random example!) - they are a modest group who are working to share their enthusiasm for their efforts with us, the users. While viewing a typed password is handy, it certainly should not be a default setting, I'm sure you'll agree - but unless you are using a ridiculous password, you should be able to type carefully enough to be sure you're getting it right sufficiently often to be able to check things out. The first thing I would ask is whether you are using Emby Connect or not. It is not unknown for people to get mixed up which login (Connect or direct) they are using. Paul 1

It's just trying to help you by giving you one possible reason why the connection might be possible. This does come up with users sometimes where they try to connect to their server but Emby isn't running at the time.
Luke 42078 Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 Quote I changed my password, since Emby didn't like my existing one, but I still can't get in. Tablet or PC. Hi, where did you change your password?

You started this thread about 1 hour ago. It is unreasonable to expect that the developers can respond that fast, even though they sometime do, They have a LOT to do and this forum is just a small part. You now have a response from a developer so you can interact with him. But i do have one little question. What kind of device is your Emby server running on? It does matter for people to help with the greatest efficiency. BTW: Your "Damn i hate forums" was the first thing you said so you had not even had an opportunity to be ignored. Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 Sorry, Luke. I just spotted this response, because I'm not smart enough to have gone looking elsewhere for responses. I happened to see the bell icon, and clicked on it. I've changed my password on my computer (Windows 11) and phone (Android 14). I can't login on my teevee. The app on my teevee (Tizen; I don't know the version number, but it's on automatic update) was installed this afternoon, and I have been unable to login at all. I've rebooted the teevee, even unplugged it for a few minutes. Nothing.
Gilgamesh_48 1240 Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 But have you changed your password on your server?
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 Gilgamesh_48, I was trying to type in my problem, but the field kicked me out. Therefore, it was incomplete. But then I went back in and composed the question in full. And how am I supposed to know you guys are too busy to hold a conversation? All I can see on my end is white space. That's why I hate forums. The administrators are trying to to do too many things at once. Maybe I was unclear about the platforms; I thought I had provided that info. Maybe not. They are Windows 11, Android 14 and Tizen; unknown version number, but I have it on Automatic Update.
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 Gilgamesh_48, I don't own a server. I'm neither wealthy enough nor technical enough to have one. I've been using the website/app, like any ig'nant user would. I didn't know having a server was a necessity. That's why I used an app.
bakes82 167 Posted January 23, 2025 Posted January 23, 2025 (edited) Its funny as plex bans more and more servers for having illegal hosts and what not, more and more people flocking to emby, more and more users like this. Edited January 23, 2025 by bakes82
Gilgamesh_48 1240 Posted January 23, 2025 Posted January 23, 2025 You NEED a server otherwise Emby can do nothing for you. Emby is a client server system and if all you have is clients then you will get nothing. You need to put your content on your server and connect to it to play your content. BTW: I am simply a user, like you, but i can follow Emby's pretty simple instructions. Also if someone is charging you for Emby access then they are in violation of Emby's terms of service and will, if found out, be totally banned.
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 23, 2025 Author Posted January 23, 2025 Bakes82, I appreciate your response, although I don't understand what you said. As Paul Simon said, I am just a poor boy Though my story's seldom told

I've been using the website/app, like any ig'nant user would. I didn't know having a server was a necessity. That's why I used an app. Well then. The app is solely a client for streaming media from a server. It does absolutely nothing on its own. Have you been streaming media with emby? If so, and you are not running a server yourself; you must be accessing someone else's server. This is typically against embys TOS, so you will receive little support for it here. You will have to take your issue to whoever runs the server you are connecting to.
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 23, 2025 Author Posted January 23, 2025 Gilgamesh_48, I never said anything about anybody asking for money. Apparently I misunderstood the purpose of Emby. I thought it was a way to watch DVDs I've ripped to my hard drive, from any device that's connected to the internet. I thought it was for po', simple folks to use, without fancy, expensive equipment that you need a PhD to operate. I'll go away and leave y'all alone. Sorry I poked my stupid head up. If Emby's instructions were indeed simple, then I wouldn't have been asking for help. I guess I'm the simple one here. It's working on my tablet, at least for now. I'll just leave well enough alone. My expectations were too high. 1
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 23, 2025 Author Posted January 23, 2025 Darkassassin07, the files I have been able to view are ones that are on my computer. I don't know if anyone in my slum has a server or even how to access it if they do. What makes you think I've been on someone else's server?

It is - but it can't save you from needing to read the instructions in order to understand basically how it works. The "server" is not an expensive box, but an installed copy of Emby Server which your clients connect to, and which sends the media streams out to them. https://emby.media/support/articles/Quick-Start.html Paul Edited January 23, 2025 by pwhodges

I don't know if anyone in my slum has a server or even how to access it if they do. What makes you think I've been on someone else's server? Perhaps there's a misunderstanding in terminology. 'Server' just refers to the portion of the software that runs on a machine listening for other devices to connect to it. This could be on your personal PC. My assumption comes from you claiming to not have this. If you are not running the server software, someone else must be as the clients are functionally useless without. Perhaps you are running this portion and just don't really understand it. I'd recommend reading through the quick start guide posted above, gain a bit more understanding of embys structure; and come back with more questions if necessary.
Ailurophile 1 Posted January 23, 2025 Author Posted January 23, 2025 Pwhodges, I'm confused. Is this "server" hardware, or is it software? Because those instructions in the link you provided seem to treat it as software. But others here talk as if it's hardware. As long as I keep Emby running on my PC and Android tablet, I can watch videos that are on my computer's hard drive - including ones I've ripped while having this conversation. If I log out, I have difficulty getting back in. But I installed the app on my Samsung (Tizen) teevee, but it refuses to recognize my password. Password visibility to the user should be default. I took typing in high school (on an IBM Selectric) and was a journalist in the Army; but I still use the Biblical typing system (seek and ye shall find). I'm not skilled enough to look at the field as I'm typing; I have to look at the keyboard. So I don't know if what the field reads and what I intended to type are the same. That's why I want to see the password - so I can verify what I typed. This is especially important when I'm creating the password. I need to be assured that I entered what I think I entered. If I mistype, it'll never ever let me in.
darkassassin07 652 Posted January 23, 2025 Posted January 23, 2025 Everyone here has been referring to software, not hardware.
