Emby does not transcode to H265 / AV1 even when the client and the GPU support it

Hi everyone,

Been running Emby for a little bit now, so far it's working great with a few irks here and there.
One of those is as the title says: even when a client -does- support h265 or AV1 playback, the server never uses it to transcode to, it always uses h264 when it needs to transcode anything.

I have h265 decode and encode set up in my transcoding settings, same as my h264 settings (GPU acceleration), and while it does decode it during transcoding on the server side, it never chooses to encode to h265 or AV1.

For AV1 I know it's not currently supported for transcoding (though I really wish it was!), I don't know why h265 isn't being done. Is there some setting I missed? Is there a developer/advanced mode I can use to change this behaviour?

Thanks in advance!

The H265 in transcoding option is for when you re-encode a video not for live transcoding, AV1 option is for decoding.

They could make the instructions a little more clear.

Thank you for the information, I indeed did not interpret it this way since the Transcoding tab shows both the same way. It'd be nice if we could have realtime transcoding support h265 & AV1 though...

Any idea if this is planned?
