gcsmithiv 1 Posted January 15, 2025 Posted January 15, 2025 I'm considering Embly as a media server for personal content (I'm a newbie so appreciate any recommendations). Can I run Embly on the same PC used for personal and office work to stream to a 4K TV? Content wouldn't be streaming when anyone is using the PC. More details: - I have home video and photos in various formats from old digitized VCR tapes (yup I'm an old guy) and JPGs, to iphone pics and video in HEIC/HEVC and want to stream them to a TLS 4K TV without losing the dynamic range of the newer formats (I don't want to convert the HEIC formats down to JPGs for example). The TV supports JPG but not HEIC. I understand Embly supports HEIC/HEVC. - The content's organized in folders on my main PC and the PC and TV are on the same home network. - The TV is a smart Roku TV but doesn't seem to offer a Embly widget. - The PC is modern, with a large SSD and a graphics card running Win 11. - I manage all my visual media using Adobe Lightroom Classic so I'd prefer not to have to invest in something like a NAS to run the media server and migrate all the content to it. Questions: 1. Can I use the same PC to run Win 11 and Embly? If not what are recommendations; if so, what are the implications/issues? 2. What do I need to stream to the TV and not lose fidelity of the newer formats? Do I need something like an Apple TV device to receive the stream and send it to the TV via HDMI (I'm new to this)? It's doesn't appear, or isn't clear, some of the streaming sticks, e.g. Chromecast, support HEIC. 3. How would I control (selecting/playing etc.), video and photos remotely as the TV is downstairs while the PC is upstairs. 4. Other suggestions? I would think this as a very common use case but can't find much info on how people are set up to do it. Thanks!

pwhodges 2012 Posted January 15, 2025 Posted January 15, 2025 For what looks like moderately light usage, running Emby server (note, not "Embly") on your desktop should be OK. On remote devices, you run an Emby client (which may just be a web client which downloads from the server, or may be a dedicated client for the device), and you do all operations through that client. Clients are typically installed from the device's store. Running the web client is always free, but some dedicated clients (basically iOS and Android mobile) need either (a) a Premiere subscription on the server, which enables all clients, or (b) an unlock purchase for that client (tied to the store login, so, for instance, a single purchase can be used on multiple devices which use the same store login) - the Premiere feature matrix linked below gives details. On a Roku TV you can download the Emby client for free from their store - no need for a separate stick/box. gcsmithiv 1 Posted January 17, 2025 Author Posted January 17, 2025 Thx for the information. What is sent from the Emby server to the Emby widget in the TV, is it the image file, i.e. the HEIC photo file? And what converts this into something the TV can display? Since the TV can only deal with JPG images I’m trying to confirm that my HEIC/HEVC files will be displayed properly on the TV. Thx

The client app on the TV is aware of what is supported and will request conversions from the server as needed.
