Roku failing to show ASS subtitles

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello,

Using the roku app on all my roku ultras (2018, 2020, 2024 models) fail to show subtitles for spoken words on my video files with ass subtitles. They do however show up when looking at sign/screens etc when they show up on video. I have attached the logs to this post. I have enabled the burn in SSA/ASS subtitles options on the app. I have also tried selecting the "attempt playback correction option" under the cog wheel when the video is playing with no success. Playing the same video files on plex and jellyfin work flawlessly and burn the subs into the video as they should. Thank you for any help in advance!

Hi.  What happens if you deselect that option?

Are you sure you haven't simply selected a "forced" or "signs & songs" subtitle track, which wouldn't include the dialogue?  There's no way that a single subtitle track (in SSA/ASS format) would distinguish signs and dialogue.

I never allow the forced flag myself, because I have a feeling that it can cause trouble in subtitle selection in some situations.

Yes I am sure, the full track is selected and it only shows the signs and songs portion of the subtitles. When characters are talking no words appear. But if they look at a computer screen for example, the translated english words appear. I have toggled both subs that are available to be sure, it seems when just the signs and songs track is selected it doesn't work at all.

It appears there are many many many fonts embedded along with the subtitles.

These will never work correctly with Direct Play since the Roku doesn't understand the Noto character set or how to load fonts from within the media itself.

The thing that is baffling me is the same show/files work flawlessly on plex and jellyfin on the same rokus. Here are the screen shots you requested below:

I have tried the subtitle mode of default and forced only with no changes to the results.

@becksworthCan you temporarily change your "Preferred subtitle language" to "any" and your "subtitle mode" to "no subtitles" to match how mine looks above.

image.thumb.jpeg.ec6a57ed5d0d1dcfdf0badc2929f792b.jpeg

After this choose which subtitle you need from the items detail screen and get it selected. It should then show under the "Subtitles:" text once you choose it. Then after this just play the item using the play button shown on the detail screen. Make sure to leave the option to burn ASS subtitles into the video as enabled. Need them to burn in to show up correctly as they do in the other apps you mentioned. Let us know if the subtitles show up this way on the Roku app.

I tried this out and the same result is happening. Only signs and songs showing up and no spoken text. Here is what the dashboard is showing me:

Is it burning in the subtitles, I just don't know why they're not showing up

I tried playing a completely different anime series I have with .ass subtitles as well. It took a long time to start and when it did, it was very choppy and would skip a lot. But the spoken language words would appear at the bottom. Here is the logs for this one

So in that case there is only one subtitle stream, and that has not got a forced flag.

In your failing example, can you try removing the forced flag on the subtitles that have it?  (MKVToolNix can do it, or to avoid remuxing I use JMKVpropedit)

I think this may be the key.  The Roku player takes "forced" literally.

When you scroll over there is another forced track plus A LOT of "attachments" you can see in below screenshots. These are also present in the original video I tried playing that started this thread. I just noticed this.

Why would I need to take out the forced flag if I have two other media servers playing it perfectly on the same device?

Because we're trying to diagnose Emby's issue.  But problems with forced subs have been common, and frankly Emby should have got properly on top of them by now.

The other attachment are fonts.  SSA/ASS subtitles, unlike SRT, define their appearance and layout, including what fonts to use - and it can't be assumed that any target machine or device has the required fonts installed.  This is why, to get anything like the intended appearance, such subtitles need either to be handled by the device (which Roku doesn't do), or burnt in by the server.
