Some ‘people’ photos don’t show until I click them

The majority of my people photos work fine. However, very often I find that someone, usually a minor actor, has the default empty thumbnail. But when I click to go to the person page, a photo is there.

From that point forward, their photo shows on all pages. I don’t have to retrieve a new image, just seeing it on the person page seems to populate the thumbnail that shows on cast & crew view.

Any idea what might cause this, or a way to force populate all those photos?

Do you have 'download images in advance' enabled in each libraries settings? I believe that's the only setting that effects that.

Hmm i’m not seeing that setting. All of the image and metadata settings look good in the library. And 95% of people don’t have this happen. I feel like it could be lesser cast members added at a later date, then the metadata refresh happens but it doesn’t get a thumbnail? Not entirely sure but it’s very few people it happens to.

It's at the bottom of the image metadata fetcher settings, after enabling 'show advanced settings'

PD,

I think you may be dealing with the browser time-out settings.  A browser will give up trying to find new online content that is not yet available at the server source because either a particular page was never requested or if it had been requested, not all the images were cached.

A quick search online seems to show that some browsers can be tweaked, but Chrome, for example cannot be changed.
 https://duckduckgo.com/?q=chrome+browser+timeout+get+image+files&ia=web

I have not tested this, but it seems that if you click on the actor and the actor's page comes up, this initiates another image request online and there is only one image on that page, so you generally have success if an image is available.  Some actor's just will not have an acceptable image.  By the way, it costs around $120 a year to have an image account at IMDB and only images exactly matching required head shot format are ever forwarded as a proper head shot.  Some actor's might have a full body image and that is not considered correct.

Once the actor's image finally appears, then it should show up in the media page, if you force a refresh.  Coming back to the media page with a back button does not count, because the browser is showing the page from memory which still has the actor's headshot missing.  Use [Shift F5] to force a page refresh for Windows.

I hope that make sense and helps.

Click the library button and enter one of your libraries to EDIT it.

Click the show advanced settings button or you wont see the option below.

Checkmark the download images in advance then start a new library scan afterwards. Notice how much longer it now takes to complete your library scans as it is now downloading all these images in advance.

Ohh I see the setting, it is indeed off. Although - I wonder if it is more like @visproductionis saying.

I don't mind if the images are downloaded once they are actually viewed, but the problem is that some of them don't download at all.

I just tried to find the issue to reproduce. I ran into what might be the issue, but I actually got what appears to be dead links on some photos. Here is an example:

image.thumb.png.8dae7b3790e93b435ad638f2e6485f43.png

Now, when I click into the 'Storm Reid' character, the image loads on her page:

And finally, when I go back to the prior page where it was broken and refresh the page, her photo is there.

I feel like this issue is a bit different than pre-loading images, and more about some broken links that somehow get fixed when visiting the person page.

Hope this helps get some more details into what is happening.

@speechlesAs an Emby dev you should know that "Download images in advance" is not meant for people.

@pünktchenI did not know this. But I am also using MediaCompanion to scan and it is probably filling in those actors. Select all and rescrape specific actors then download trailers.

You can search for A***

And multiselect all in the people tab.

3 dot line gives you an option to refresh all metadata + images.

That worked for me.

It's really annoying, we don't have a people metadata editor.

The images that you get come from the movie and series metadata that the people belong to. Sometimes this information won't have the image for some people, but when you click on them, we'll do a broader search to try and get one. So that's why you see this behavior.

Thank you Luke, that sounds exactly like what is happening.

I'm guessing the bulk metadata tool might come in handy here for 'clicking' on all people that might be in this state? I'd hate to have to refresh metadata and re-download images on everyone, but triggering that 'broader search' in bulk would definitely be my solution here.
