renegeed 2 Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 The subtitles for my media are much smaller compared to Emby Theater, I don't appear to be able to change them to a different size within the settings. Doesn't react to my changes. I've tried Windows 11's own subtitle settings as well, even with a reboot nothing changes. Originally posted this somewhere else, but I think that was the wrong place to ask, apologies! Especially for anime it's nice when to subtitles are just a bit bigger. softworkz 5066 Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 @renegeed - Can you please post the MPV logs? (Settings >> About >> Logfiles)
renegeed 2 Posted January 8, 2025 Author Posted January 8, 2025 @softworkzClicking on it doesn't seem to do anything. Is there another spot where I can get these files from? So far I've looked in Appdata, but only found Emby Theater. If it helps, I do use OneDrive's backup, so my documents folder isn't in the usual spot directly in my home folder.
renegeed 2 Posted January 8, 2025 Author Posted January 8, 2025 Apologies, I saw the About page now, that shows the location. I made sure to open the same media file like in the screenshot if that helps. mpv-20250108T231416655.txt
softworkz 5066 Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 On the "About" tab, you see the file paths, including the path of the log folder.
renegeed 2 Posted January 8, 2025 Author Posted January 8, 2025 @softworkzForgot to tag you earlier. The file is in my previous post. Thanks!
softworkz 5066 Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 Thanks for the log. These are ASS subtitles, which come with their own styling. The subtitle settings do not apply to those subtitles as indicated here: Does it look different than when playing with VLC for example?
renegeed 2 Posted January 8, 2025 Author Posted January 8, 2025 @softworkz MPC-HC (without default subtitle styling enabled): VLC (default settings I think, text size in settings on Auto): Emby (new): It's a bit darker due to the bar below. Emby Theater seems to use the same size as VLC and MPC-HC. If there's a hidden setting somewhere for MPV in a config file that I can change to get the subtitles larger that would be fine too.

ASS subtitles are meant to be rendered "as designed". Creating style overrides can have weird effects, becaue there are often other elements and animations where things wouldn't fit together anymore. Here's a crazy example - solely achieved by ASS subtitles: Crazy_ASS_Subtitles.mp4 1
renegeed 2 Posted January 9, 2025 Author Posted January 9, 2025 @softworkzEven though this is the case, would it be possible to get the subtitles larger like with the older Emby Theater? I am assuming they're using the same videoplayer, if not a bit newer. As it stands it's a bit too small to watch comfortably.

Would you be able to provide a sample video for testing where you see this? I've sent you a link where you can safely upload the file.

renegeed 2 Posted January 9, 2025 Author Posted January 9, 2025 @softworkzThat's a nice service! I've included the media file as well as extracted .ass files, I've gotten these through mkvtoolnix/MKVcleaver. Track05 should have the proper subtitles, but just to be sure, I've included Track04 as well. Dialogue is the one I've used for testing. If it helps, I'm using a 24 inch monitor, 1080p and 100% dpi scaling. 1
Solution softworkz 5066 Posted January 10, 2025 Solution Posted January 10, 2025 3 hours ago, renegeed said: @softworkzThat's a nice service! No more downloading user samples from questionable file hosters asking for payment or to wait hours for download completion... Thanks a lot for the sample. It turns out that there was an issue in the new Windows app. Usually videos with ASS subtitles have the fonts embedded, and those cases have been primarily tested. In case of your file, the font that is used (Swiss721 or so) is not included but installed with Windows and the new app didn't pick up that font properly. It's fixed for the next update - actually one after the one which is currently in store certification. Thanks again! 3
renegeed 2 Posted January 22, 2025 Author Posted January 22, 2025 Gave it another try with the update today and it appears to have been solved, thanks! Also checked a couple of other anime's and they all appear to give the correct sized subtitles. 1
