HouseOfCards 95 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Good day all, I have a quick question. At one point, I spent days downloading higher resolution album artwork for my music. This was some time ago, and I recently noticed that all the artwork is low resolution 568x507 again. Before I go through this once more, is Emby only going to resize them if I do? The higher resolution (often 1000x1000) images are necessary on devices like an Apple TV, where the artwork looks horrible on a big screen with the lower resolution art. Any clarification on if/how this works would be helpful. I'd like the resolutions I download remain unchanged. Not sure if I just had some sort of hiccup which reset them to low-res or not, but it takes a long time to update them, and I don't want to do it repeatedly. Thanks, and Happy New Year.
Solution Luke 42078 Posted January 1, 2025 Solution Posted January 1, 2025 Hi, Emby will not change your source images. It only scales them on the fly based on what client apps request. Does that answer your question? 1
HouseOfCards 95 Posted January 2, 2025 Author Posted January 2, 2025 Luke, Yes, thank you... FYI, it seems as though the images were being stored in the servers image cache at a lower resolution, and not actually modified on the storage location. If that's a possible thing, I don't know...? In other words, I had higher resolution images stored with the media, but every time I looked in Emby, it reported them at 568x507. Keep in mind I have two Emby servers, and it could be some wacky thing caused by my setup again... LOL All my media is meticulously tagged with MusicBrainz before I add to the storage location, so there are embedded images in all of them. Perhaps the images got scanned in on initial import to a cache, and were no longer looking at the underlying media for the higher resolution? I'm just trying to give you ideas in case anything rings true to you. Whenever I do a "refresh media", I never check the option to replace images to not spam the providers. Maybe Emby never refreshes the stored cached images? Anyhow, have a great New Year buddy.
HouseOfCards 95 Posted January 2, 2025 Author Posted January 2, 2025 From the edit images screen in the browser. The images looked grainy on my Apple TV, so I checked in the browser and saw most of them were this size. I had previously updated all of them (possibly on the other server, not sure), and the size on the disk was bigger than 568x507 but it was showing these low-res images. This particular album has no other art returned so it's presumably coming from the MP3 file because there is no "folder.jpg" on the disk. So it has to be the embedded image. For all the rest with available images, once I selected a high-res image again, they all were much clearer and now show the larger sizes again... Not knowing how Emby works internally is why I asked the question. From what I saw, it seemed like once the low resolution image was pulled in, that's what Emby cached and displayed. As I said, my updates may have been done in the other server (same storage locations) and got updated in that servers cache, but this server kept its originals because I didn't change them there... possibly?? And maybe this server didn't detect the file change (folder.jpg) and update the image cache? I'm just shooting in the wind since I don't know the process Emby uses, but if this makes sense, maybe a refresh metadata (even without replacing images selected) should scan and update the cache with the images on disk already. Not pull new images like when that is chosen, but just refresh from what is stored on disk. I have two Emby servers, but some people use multiple servers (Plex, Jellyfin) and updated artwork it would seem, should get picked up. I'm not really positive how this happened, but I know I previously updated them and it didn't stick. It may not be a bug as it only happens in weird setups, but it might be an "undesirable outcome" worthy of fixing. I'm just trying to help you guys squish bugs when they creep up. But I'm still going to mention that I'd love the ability to have Emby randomly select from multiple artwork images so we can collect more than one cover art. I'm gonna mention that every time we chat. LOL Let me know if you need further digging on my end. Stay safe out there.
Luke 42078 Posted January 2, 2025 Posted January 2, 2025 Yea the size you see there will always be the original. So yes you are right, that must be the embedded image.
