Playback on Roku only sometimes skips back a few seconds then resumes

I am back to using he beta most of the time and with the regular Roku software I have seen no skipping at all. However my current setup seems to be a bit less forgiving of video quality. I have some very old videos, like the original "Lone ranger," Twilight Zone, "The Saint," "Perry Mason" and "Dragnet" and some of those were encoded a VERY long time ago and the video breaks up from time to time and when a really bad spot rears up the video breaks up and sometime I get a jump back. The strange thing is that the video always breaks up before the skip back and, most of the time, when it plays through the bad spot the video looks fine.

It does not happen often and, so far, never really interferes with viewing except for the very brief period of break up.

I am happy with the current playback and I hope that nothing happens to make it worse.

I guess I could reencode or even rerecord much of the content that shows issues but the problem is not bad enough to cause me to spend the time to do that. Also the fact that when it happens and by the time i notice it, I am past the problem and, so far, it only happens a maximum of once per show.

For now, if Emby fixes the problem I may not even notice it as the skip is rare enough that I only notice when it happens and I never react to the problem until well after it happened.

Hi.  There were no changes in the app related to this and the beta he was referring to was released last night so you already have that version.

If you still would like to participate in the Roku beta and are willing to provide feedback regularly on features being tested, please let us know.

Just following up on this, I'm still interested in participating in the Roku beta thanks.

It happens a lot when watching live tv from an over the air provider.  Often, but not always, when it glitches it repeats the period and then just freezes until you hit stop and restart it.

It does happen most often when the over the air signal is weakened (bad weather, etc).  I've noticed this as long as I can remember (and I'm not using the beta).

HOWEVER, it's too early to tell if this is related at all, but I recently started using the Emby LG TV app and I have not experienced this issue on the LG version -- I've always used the Emby Roku app in the past.

Hi. Yes, different players have different tolerances for bad inputs and the Roku player is fairly unforgiving.

I saw this jump back for the first time yesterday; it was at around 20:55 in the attached log - but I can't see anything untoward there.  Nor can I see any issue with the file.

I have several of the previous model Roku Ultras.  They work fine... but I recently purchased one of the newest Ultras (2024) and it does this same thing.  Not only when I use the back arrow, but even when pausing the video.  It will hiccup for a second then continue playing (whether trying to pause, or scan either direction).  I have noticed that it goes from direct play to remuxing the audio (video remains direct play).  If I stop and restart the video it will reset to all direct play.  But as soon as I press pause or the arrows, it will hiccup and go back to remuxing and continues to play from the same spot.  I have tried it will a bunch of different 5.1 audio codecs as well as stereo only (both AAC and AC3), doesn't seem to matter what flavor of audio it starts out with.  And sometimes while it is choking on this, I've tried to turn on stats for nerds, it acknowledges the key press by making the menu disappear but the stats window doesn't appear (most times it works as expected).  I have also occasionally seen it get to where clicking the up arrow shows the time slider without any of the information that should be above the bar (such as the title, rating, play status, etc. - nothing is above the time slider).

I've wondered if Roku has something new going on with their newest model or if the one I have is simply defective.  I do not use the Rokus to stream/play anything but my local Emby server, so I have nothing to compare it against other than all of its older brothers at my house don't do any of this.
