hootie418 5 Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 I have several videos that have subtitles in them. They are listed as an option when I click the on-screen CC button and are shown when played in VLC. I cannot find a common factor. I thought that maybe h265 files where the subtitles are tied into the video but some do show. Is there a plugin or some setting I should fix? Thanks as always
pwhodges 2012 Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 I don't see a description of a problem... What is happening that you don't expect, or not happening that you do expect? Paul
visproduction 315 Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 (edited) hoot, For Emby playback, you need subtitles types that are supported. Emby transcode can handle embedded subtitles better. I don't use that, so I don't know it's limits. Direct browser playback can only support certain types of subtitles. I don't know how the subtitle plug-in works. TV playback from a website has all sorts of blocks, due to the TV app. Emby apps are better. Essentially, if you want subtitles to work for everything, then use separate .vtt, .srt or .ass files named correctly. The good news is that you can often convert the embedded files inside .mkv videos to external subtitles and you can do it in bulk, if you use the right command or follow the instructions for these converting apps. Browsers can show subtitles from separate .vtt, .srt, .ass files. Emby will show them if the file name are correct. Emby, transcoding. I believe, can pull embedded subtitles from within .mkv videos and present them to play. Other forum members will know this info. I never use it. VLC pulls subtitles of almost all types and makes them available to view. I have not tested everything. If something works on VLC, it sort of means nothing for browser or Emby app playback. You can pull out subtitles from .mkv and convert them with apps and online sites. Full ffmpeg can often do everything, but it's mostly command line or complex 3rd party GUI. MKVCleaver subrip (online) More info on browser playback of subs and .vtt details: https://caniuse.com/?search=subtitles https://w3c.github.io/webvtt/#the-vttcue-interface Hope that helps. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!
MrAudio 22 Posted January 1, 2025 Posted January 1, 2025 The OpenSubtitles plugin works pretty well for most content, BUT, it used to access OpenSubtitles.ORG, but now uses OpenSubtitles.COM, which uses a newer interface and has a whole new user database, so if you set it up a few years ago, you'll need to switch over to the .COM website and create a new account and reconfigure the plugin. OpenSubtitles gives you .srt files, which are the most compatible and do not force transcoding - many other formats technically work, but REQUIRE transcoding no matter what, which is always a huge pain. Sometimes the plug-in will pick the wrong version of a subtitle - one that was synched to a DVD vs. a Blu-Ray vs. a streaming download, which are often all different - so you may occasionally have to go to the website and download a different version until you find one that matches, but that aside, the plugin works pretty well.
hootie418 5 Posted January 1, 2025 Author Posted January 1, 2025 My apologies. I have not been able to get a clip of the video types. I am working on trying to clip it. When I make a clip of the file using MKV then the clip works. Would it show up in log files?

hootie418 5 Posted January 3, 2025 Author Posted January 3, 2025 After reviewing a few things to ensure the right episodes were in the log, I switched televisions and it worked on a different TV. I don't know if it is Firestick or TV-related but they seem to be working now. I don't know what led to the sudden changed. I did not mess with any settings or install any add-ons. 1
