Who said I'm mad? I'm simply leaving this feedback for others to see why I no longer consider Emby a viable option. I've considered this before when they refused to allow users to utilize an external database. And I wouldn't have bought an "extension" even if I knew about it. I still believe that setting a static number of weekly devices (that use premium features like my own gpu) is a tough sell for anyone of right mind. As if the Emby team has any idea how big a family is. It's an arbitrary value that they've determined to be a limitation. I'll never agree with "freemium" pricing strategies like this. Especially how it's been implemented. Having explored various revenue models, from subscription-based to ad-supported frameworks, I understand the delicate balance needed to ensure profitability while maintaining high user satisfaction. But by only offering a monthly subscription to increase the number of devices allowed is lacking customer satisfaction. Not to mention that I have no alerts telling me users received this issue, no direct offers to remedy the situation from the management interface, and no warnings before directly disabling use. Even banks waive the first few overdraft fees. Poor implementation. If they want to drive their customers away that's an Emby problem, not a me problem. And if those aren't problems for you, great. We all have different opinions and I don't think it's ridiculous in 2025 (days away) to expect my server to stream my files without unnecessary limitations. But I'm not going to pay more so my friends and family can watch shows. I just don't care that much and I'm certainly not a "power user". As someone that is literally in the business of directing and executing the development of applications, I understand completely the process of solution transitioning and when to do it. Like I said, it'll take me a few hours, not a big deal. If I lose some features I never use anyway by switching, that's totally fine. Do I wish I didn't have to, sure. If anything I'm now more motivated to help a more open source project. In my opinion, Plex isn't viable as they own auth. Emby has now become non-viable to me because they paywall transcoding and impose these limitations poorly. But to vehemently defend Emby just because it's worth it to you, and you love protecting ever-changing terms and conditions (odd hobby lol), is quite embarrassing. I have every right to voice my disagreement and opinion on this forum for their feedback. And now that I have I consider this matter closed.
Neminem 1518 Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 The license use to be 15 devices limit but was upped to 25.

'I'm not mad, but everyone else will be' Right.... Tbh, I'm mostly in this thread interested in your false claims that Emby has changed the terms of premier agreements and that Emby was created from Jellyfins code. I've already addressed the fact that no longer offering a product is not changing the terms. You got (and continue to get) exactly what you paid for. If you'd have bought the lifetime extended licence when it was available, you'd have that too. As to you not knowing about the limit: Dec 2 2019 (prior to the creation of your Emby forum account): Literally the first sentence on the page. Regarding who's code came from where: Here's Jellyfins first release, where they themselves state they are a descendant of Embys code. https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/tree/release-10.1.0 Having tried both; I'll stick with Emby. I actually agree Emby should reintroduce the extended lifetime licence; however I've never personally had a need for it, so it's not really on my radar.

I wish that they would. I've found myself bumping against the limit on occasion as we have a lot of devices in our household and I've shared externally with a few family members. It definitely causes headaches when we do hit the limit. The monthly subscription is hard to justify for those of us that are just barely on the edge of the normal limit. I'd happily pay the cost of another license just to have more device slots for when they're actually needed. Yes buying a separate license is still technically an option, but running two emby instances just to have more device slots is unnecessary administrative overhead and comes with it's own set of issues/technical hurdles. I hope that the emby team reconsiders offering the lifetime device extension at some point again. All of that being said, I don't think that getting unreasonably angry over the matter, calling the emby team greedy, or making unnecessary rants about switching to Jellyfin (which IMO is still considerably inferior to emby) helps one bit. 1 1
Solution rhodges 49 Posted December 25, 2024 Solution Posted December 25, 2024 Just make the limit concurrent and problem solved. Or, concurrent unique IP addresses. That way if 5 people are in the same house they count as 1. Basically, there are options. I too am keeping an eye on Jellyfin and will consider moving over if I come across this limit. I only have about 5 or 6 users, but they use a plethora or devices. 1

You ignored my entire comment around customer satisfaction and business model approach to reiterate your lack of need for a feature (as if you’re the only user of Emby) and love for terms of service. rsvg 18 Posted December 25, 2024 Author Posted December 25, 2024 Let’s simplify this to implementation. Tell me why it makes sense that my management interface says this but my user is getting errors.

I'm not sure if this exit is more like Russia exiting Afghanistan or more like the USA exiting Vietnam. Either way it is both screwed up and slow. And to add: Both "invading" country's see the departure as a loss. And that part is a bit different here. 1
