Jdiesel 1440 Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Can someone explain how chapter generation works in Emby? I have a few movies that only have 2 chapters, others than have chapters every 5 minutes, and others that are named and at specific time stamps. Is this information coded into the source file, pulled from the metadata provider, or generated by Emby? If it is the last one, is there a reason that Emby would only be generating two chapters for a 2 hour movie instead of one every 5 minutes?
ebr 16363 Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Hi. They come from the file itself if they are there. If not, Emby will generate default chapters at 5 minute intervals. The one you see with 2 chapters must have those defined within the file.
Jdiesel 1440 Posted December 24, 2024 Author Posted December 24, 2024 Thanks that explains it! Side questions for anyone who might know. Is there a source for chapter information, and is there a tool that can easily edit or better yet automatically apply that info to the video files?
Happy2Play 9819 Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 (edited) Think it has been mentioned before but the other guys have a db. ChapterGrabber Software Looks to be a static copy of what use to exist here. Edited December 24, 2024 by Happy2Play 1
denebianslimemo 0 Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Thanks for asking this @Jdiesel, I've been wondering about this myself for some time. What do you mean by "the other guys" @Happy2Play? I wonder if an LLM could be handed the script downloaded from the net, or just the subtitles and asked to make best guesses at the chapters. Or if it's a TV show, "this is a 5 act tv show, where are the actual dividers for the acts" Please create a list of timestamps for the chapter or acts, and give each a provocative name that does not spoil the video

But in the end there is no way for Emby to know this or get this info for any given file and has to be provided or manually create. Edited December 24, 2024 by Happy2Play

New option per library option added in 4.9+ Add library options to control generation of chapters when none are embedded within video files Existing embedded chapters will always be used.

No more that Emby has always used generating these interval placeholders. But yes, disabling it could speed things up when importing new items as it would be one less task to do. Will not apply to anything imported prior to changing this option. 1
