Subtitle display items in mp4 with multiplexed subtitles

I had asked a question about subtitles in another topic, but the main purpose is different, so I'll ask a new question.

I have an mp4 with multiplexed subtitles, and this question is about the name of the subtitle items.
The subtitles are,

  • Japanese forced
  • Japanese

There are two types of subtitles.

When I look at the information of emby,

There seems to be no way to identify whether it is a Japanese forced subtitle or a Japanese subtitle.
It appears that the title of the Media Info item is used for this.

However, when I checked the title in the MediaInfo application, I found that it is different from the title in the emby.

Is there any way to display it as “Japanese forced narrative” in the display of the emby?

File naming helps:

movieName (2023) - 1080P.en.default.srt = English (Default SRT)
movieName (2023) - 1080P.en.forced.srt = English (Forced SRT)

movieName (2023) - 1080P.en.SDH.srt = English (Forced SRT)

movieName (2023) - 1080P.fr.srt = French (SRT)
movieName (2023) - 1080P.jp.srt = Japanese (SRT)

Use to be an option for this but has changed in 4.8+ as previous versions you would set this option.

Not entirely sure what the server reads now.

I don't see that item in 4.8.10.0, so I guess that means it is gone.
Does it mean that we should give up on the current situation? Sad to say.

Sorry, I'm sorry. It is not an external subtitle, but a multiplexed subtitle, so it is not applicable to this case.

The server does import this information, but perhaps ffmpeg just isn't reading it for mp4 mov_text?

For example if you try this with an mkv with embedded subrip, then the embedded title will be imported just fine.

I don't know ffmpeg at all and I don't think I can do anything about it.

I converted the existing mp4 and srt to mkv as a test. As you said, the content set in “Title” was correctly displayed in the subtitle list.

However, there are currently more than 2000 mp4 with subtitles, so it may be difficult to create a batch file.

Is there any possibility to display the subtitles in mp4 like mkv? I hope so.

HI, we will be updating Emby's ffmpeg build in the coming months. Perhaps that will bring support for this information within mp4 files. You could try a standalone build of ffmpeg/ffprobe 7.1 to check and find out.

Good information. I will look forward to it.
I will take this opportunity to study ffmpeg/ffprobe.

Whoops, a typo correction on my earlier post, for the SDH example...
