MikaelKW 7 Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 (edited) Hi, First time im reporting an issue here, so please ask me if there's any necessary info that i'm missing, and i'll try to provide as much info as possible. If i watch a TV-show or movie, and stop midway, and then want to continue watching say half way thru, it can take up to 5 minutes before it starts playing again. There is never any issues if i start from the beginning and watch the whole episode/movie in one go. I can even skip forward without any significant loading. When i continue watching, for me it seems like Emby almost tries to load the whole episode (even behind what i have already watched if that makes sense), because when i monitor the network traffic on the client, the download speed spikes pretty high until it is done loading and the video continues playing. What could be the issue here? I've been an Emby user for 2 years+ and never had this problem until the last 6 month (i think). Thanks in advance for any help with this issue. Edit: I can also add that i'm using Microsoft Edge on the client to watch videos. This is also what i have been doing since i started using Emby. Luke 42077 Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!
MikaelKW 7 Posted December 22, 2024 Author Posted December 22, 2024 Hi, I've added the two most recent logs. Just let me know if you need any other logs. embyserver.txt hardware_detection-63870490936.txt
Luke 42077 Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 HI, how does it compare with Chrome? Other users have reported this and it looks like an issue in the Edge video player.
MikaelKW 7 Posted December 28, 2024 Author Posted December 28, 2024 Seems like you're right about this! Playback midway through a video starts perfectly in Chrome. Takes 1-2 seconds before it starts to play. 1
MikaelKW 7 Posted January 3, 2025 Author Posted January 3, 2025 I remember now why i didn't use Chrome. Seems that theres still problems with the video jumping back and then jumping forward (https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/128718-after-upgrade-to-485-shows-will-skip-back-1-sec-or-so-and-replay/), as well as problems with subs loading. Not optimal... 1
MikaelKW 7 Posted March 19, 2025 Author Posted March 19, 2025 Can report that the issue i've been having in Microsoft Edge now exists in Google Chrome as well.

MikaelKW 7 Posted March 20, 2025 Author Posted March 20, 2025 I don't know what happened, but the issue has been happening for the past 2-3 weeks (didn't update to 4.8.11 until 2 days ago and had the same issue after that). Now when i went to shut down the Emby server to clear the logs (so that you don't have to read through a bunch of unrelated data), i tried to start playing an episode that was in half way through, and it started immediately. That has not happened for a long time. If this occurs again, i'll just send the logs as is without rebooting the server. 1
MikaelKW 7 Posted March 21, 2025 Author Posted March 21, 2025 Today the issue started again. Continuing watching 41 minutes into an episode (episode is about 55 minutes total). Tried today at 00:23 in the night. I've attached the log edited from 00:23 thorughout. embyserver (edited).txt
MikaelKW 7 Posted March 21, 2025 Author Posted March 21, 2025 Seems like Chrome now does the same as Edge, where it seems like the whole episode is being loaded instead of starting from 41 minutes.
Luke 42077 Posted March 22, 2025 Posted March 22, 2025 This is something that can happen depending on the encoding of the file, like for example if the headers have a corrupted or missing seek index.
visproduction 315 Posted March 22, 2025 Posted March 22, 2025 (edited) Mik, Ways to test if the original media has some issue: See if you can find the media and remux it without changing the codecs for video or audio. 3rd party software should be able to do it easily in about 2 minutes, tops for most servers. Another test would be to grab a video format test media of a .mkv from online that is offered as correctly formatted test videos and see if that plays back better. Use ffmpeg to inspect the media for issues. There is a command line can do this from a full ffmpeg install, if you have one. Some software like VLC has a info window pop-up [Ctrl J] that can be switched to watch playback in progress and give you also a readout of missing data. This is a little more limited than the other 3 above. It's nice to test for this. If the problem persists, then it could be a more general playback issue that needs fixing. I would guess that any of these tests would show that the media has the issue. Hope that helps. Edited March 22, 2025 by visproduction
MikaelKW 7 Posted April 1, 2025 Author Posted April 1, 2025 I have just tested the exact same video with Firefox and Chrome. Firefox (tested first) loads it withing 1 second half way through the video (23 minutes), and Chrome used about 10-15 seconds.
Luke 42077 Posted April 2, 2025 Posted April 2, 2025 Can you try reencoding the file and see if that helps?
MikaelKW 7 Posted April 3, 2025 Author Posted April 3, 2025 This seems to affect all files i have tested so far (about 6-8 TV shows). Should i test a remux of a DVD i own?
MikaelKW 7 Posted July 1, 2025 Author Posted July 1, 2025 (edited) Hi. It's been a while, but this issue is just getting more, and more frustrating... I have tested with a remuxed DVD, but sill the same issue. I just recently discovered that this issue also affects the mobile app on IOS. Any updates if this will be fixed? I have tried many of the same TV-shows and movies on for example Plex, and im yet to experience this sort of issue. Edited July 1, 2025 by MikaelKW
Luke 42077 Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 Hi, can you provide a sample video for testing? Thanks !
