From VideoStation to Emby: A short comparison review

As many Synology users know, VideoStation is phased out and we are more or less forced to find a new alternative. Many of you, including me, end up here with Emby.

I have migrated my library to Emby recently, running the Server in a Synology NAS DS124 and like to share my Emby experience compared with VideoStation so far:

Tested clients: Android + Android TV):

Pros:

- View library by file folder is supported like in VS

- Scanning is quite fast like in VS

- Metadata and Covers can be stored as files, so editing, backup is much easier than with VS

- App starts much faster than VS client

- Library editing can be accessed from the app, VS is much more restricted here

- Support for external Player like in VS

- Great modern UI design, VS looks dated.

- Less crashes than VS

Cons:

- unlock feature is broken/messed up in both clients (at least for the moment)

- premiere subscription has nearly zero value if you are not from the US as most features simply do not work in Europe (PVR/DVR, TV Guide etc)

- Library scan is much more unreliable with correct results than VS. You end up with wrong recognition if you don't have your wording 109% correct.

- No option to give a personal viewer score in the Metadata like VS offered.

- Emby does not remember used tags and genres, poor filtering options for tags. VS much more advanced here.

All in all it's a great experience so far. The biggest drawback compared to VS are the poor support for "tags" and the lack of advantages I get as a European for a premiere subscription. So I am hesitating in subscribing just for free apps + offline view.
