KeithA 5 Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 I have been using Emby Theater on my PC for many years. I was able to utilize any audio output I wanted by adding a line to the mpv.conf file. That allowed me to use something other than the audio output windows is using. After installing the new app I noticed that my audio was no longer outputting to the same device as it was previously. Instead it was utilizing the default that WIndows is using. I was able to remedy the issue for movies because there is a setting for video. However I wasn't able to locate a similar setting for app. Is there a way to set this as was the case previously? Please let me know. Thanks
KeithA 5 Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 I am just trying to use my headphones for Emby and Speakers for General Windows sounds. Thanks

Thanks I meant in your mpv.conf I imagine you were specifying a device for Emby? In the settings, there is an option to choose audio device. Does that not provide the device you wish to use? KeithA 5 Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 Sorry, yes I was specifying a device to use in Emby using mpv.conf. Is the new app supposed to utilize mpv.conf? If so it isn't seeing mine. Do I have to tell it to look in the conf files somewhere? I did find the settings within the app. However the only setting I could find was under video. Adjusting it does in fact do what I want only just for video. I would also like it to apply to audio. Thanks

Jdiesel 1431 Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 My understanding is that the new app isn't using mpv for audio, only video, so even if you could use an mpv.conf it wouldn't matter. The choice to use not use mvp had something to do with getting the now playing information into the windows UI. This also means not exclusive mode for audio. 1
KeithA 5 Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 Is there an option to set a specific output for audio? It seems to use the windows default. As mentioned I have only seen a place to adjust the output for a video which works just fine. Thanks

Guest Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 (edited) That actually raises a good point. There are no options for music playback. I did make the suggestion to use mpv for the music, and I think might happen in the future. Edited December 21, 2024 by generiq
KeithA 5 Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 My setup is basic. I use it on my windows PC. Many times I just want to have it output from headphones when using Emby. I usually default my PC to my desktop speakers. When using the old app I simply edited mpv.conf and all audio was sent to my headphone regardless of what my pc was outputting to. I found a work around. Windows allows you to steer audio per app. That works for my basic setup. Thanks

Also the information given by @generiq and @Jdiesel is correct: MPV is currently not used for audio playback. As we don't use MPV on the Xbox, we needed an audio playback implementation based on Windows media capabilities and it was economic to use the same on Windows as well, also because it provides nice playlist integration with Windows system media controls. For Linux we need to create MPV based audio playback, when it is done, it could also be used in the Windows app (one of the advantages of having a unified code base), but the direction here is not decided yet. We are gathering user feedback to see what's needed and which will be the best choice for Windows. Audio options are surely possible, but the only one at this point would have been for audio device selection, and this can already achieved by Windows settings.
KeithA 5 Posted December 22, 2024 Author Posted December 22, 2024 I thought I found a workaround however I ran into another issue. While I can now output Emby audio to the device I want using the mechanism built into WIndows each time I play a file it begins playing at max volume. For example I select media to play, it blast my ears, I adjust the volume, the media stops playing, I select another and the process starts all over again. I have also noticed that when I chose to have backdrops for the background the setting does not stick. When I close the app and reopen I am back to no backdrops. Could there be some sort of permissions issue keeping the settings from sticking? Thanks
KeithA 5 Posted December 26, 2024 Author Posted December 26, 2024 I have tried different devices for audio output. The issues remains, the volume of the audio increases to max when I move from playing 1 file to the next. I can adjust what max is in windows but that limits my ability to raise volume at times it is needed. The backdrop issue I mentioned in my previous post seems to not be happening anymore. Thanks
softworkz 5066 Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 We'll look into it next week, feel free to post a reminder so that it won't be forgotten. Thanks
KeithA 5 Posted December 27, 2024 Author Posted December 27, 2024 Ok, thanks. I have also noticed that volume is changed to MAX when the Emby app starts as well. 1

KeithA 5 Posted January 6, 2025 Author Posted January 6, 2025 Out of curiosity, what is the fix? Is there a plan to be able to have a setting within the new windows app that we can set the audio device for music similar to the option available for videos?

The Linux app (currently private beta) will need an mpv implementation for playback. Once we have that, we need to decide whether we want to use that on Windows as well or whether we stick to the Windows Media based playback. Depending on that we will either add audio device selection for the current impl. or use the mpv implementation. In both cases, you'll be able to change the audio device.
