Restrict Access to Collections or Hide Collections

Recommended Posts

I created a Holiday collection with Christmas movies, it took some time to go through all my collection and add the Christmas ones to the Holiday collection.

After Christmas is over, I would have liked to restrict access to my Holiday collection, or simply hide the collection from showing up in the collections menu, however there does not seem to be a way to do this.

Seems like I will have to delete the collection, and then go through the pain of re-adding all the movies again next year :(

I realize I could have created a Holiday library, but I don't want to split up my movies into different libraries.

Can you please allow access control to collections the same way as libraries?

Or at the very least be able to hide specific collections from showing up in the collection list?

Hopefully this is something 'smart views' can do where you restrict a view to a certain date peroid.

Alternatively, have a look for MDB Plugin/Script - it will automatically create the collection for you (if configured) and it has an automatic date peroid where that collection is active, outside this date range, it is removed.

The emby collection is generated from the MDB List - in my case it's from https://mdblist.com/lists/hdlists/christmas-movies which contains 152 christmas movies (!) of which I have 19 of them in my emby libraries - so that's all the collection consists of.

@rbjtech I went through all the plugins in the emby plugin catalog and I don't see anything called smartview or MDB?

It's under tools and utilities (sorry) - https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/125215-python-script-emby-mdblist-collection-creator/

The author of the script (python) is writing this as an emby plugin - so if you don't want to use Python - then you'll need to wait for the Plugin.

Smartviews is being delivered in the beta 4.9 release (not yet released) - and no ETA

it may take a bit of time, but you can do what i do if i want a  movie to show up in multiple places without having multiple copies wasting space. for example if there is a tv show that has a special episode, but that episode is also considered a movie, i will put the video file in the "Specials" folder for the tv series, then create an .STRM file for the video file and place it in the movie directory . the .strm file will show up as a movie file , and direct emby to the actual video file if you select it to watch. this was you can just create a separate library for your Christmas movies with .strm files and leave your actual movies where they are.

if you do not know what an .strm is, here is an example of one.

first create a new text file in note pad, the change the file extension from .txt  to .strm

second open the file in note pad type in the directory for your video file and click save ... (example from my library)  F:\Foreign Television\Tokyo Ghoul\specials\Tokyo Ghoul S00E03 Jack.mkv

now just treat that strm file a movie file and place it in whatever directory you chose. it will work like a movie as long as you don't change to location of the actual movie file.

it might take a bit of work if you have a lot of titles, but in my opinion, its the cleanest way to do the job and keep things orginized
