yocker 1247 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 A friend of mine has trouble with quality settings in Emby on hes TV. He has a Samsung TV QE50Q60TAUXXC, any one know what kind of quality (bitrate) he should be able to get from that TV? Want to find out before i recommend him getting a Nvidia Shield or something similar.
Luke 42077 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Hi, what exactly do you mean? It's hard to answer such an open question. 1
FrostByte 5392 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Is your friend streaming from their own server? Samsung TVs (and I believe most all brands) have a 100 Mbps nic, and the Shield has 1000mbps. I don't really have any issues streaming remuxes from my NAS to my TV (as long as I don't try to stream unsupported HD audio or PGS subs causing a transcode). Basically, if it direct plays then everything is fine. I leave my settings on Auto, but I suppose you could set it at 4K 100 Mbps, or whatever speed their network can handle. If your friend wants HD audio or PGS subs then the Shield is a great choice as you know. The only knock against the Shield is that it doesn't support HDR10+ or some of the newer codecs) and the Samsung doesn't do DV of course. My preference: if the movie/show is sourced from streaming service such as Amazon, Hulu, etc then I would use the Samsung for HDR10+, but if it's sourced from UHD then I would use something like a Shield for the HD audio. Rarely do you see a UHD with HDR10+.

Sorry, guess my bad english is at play again. What i mean is, without taking connection into consideration what is the system in the TV powerful enough to handle? Fx. can it handle a remux movie without starting to stutter and buffer? Everything on my server is made with compatibility in mind so nothing should require transcoding to be able to be played on a Samsung TV. He has made plans for getting a Nvidia Shield and i just want to stop him wasting money if hes TV is powerful enough to handle everything and it's hes connection thats the problem instead. 25 minutes ago, FrostByte said: Is your friend streaming from their own server? As i just wrote to Luke, hes streaming from my server but says he can't raise the quality because hes TV can't handle it and there for want to buy a Nvidia Shield. All i want to do is make sure he doesn't waste money on that in case hes TV is powerful enough to handle whats on my server. Bitrate available to others on my server is usually max 40Mpbs as i keep Remux movies locked to my self. (can't be arsed making those available ) Everything is made sure to be as compatible with Samsung and LG TVs as possible. Basically, ignoring Audio, Internet and such.. Does he really need a Nvidia Shield or should hes TV be enough?

May need to elaborate, what can't the tv handle? As I don't really see changing clients making a difference. But a specific example many help.

Guess i can change my question to, is the Nvidia Shield much more powerful than the TV? Will the TV have problems with lets say 4K 60Mpbs HDR10 5.1 movies.

Comparing clients alone sure @FrostBytepretty much covered it. But without specific examples it will be impossible to answer as 60Mbps across the internet I will imagine can be hit and miss as you are likely to be thottled/traffic shaping by ISP. One reason no online streaming service even comes close to that high of a bitrate.

Being throttled is very rare here in Denmark though, ISPs here tend to just give access and not mess with your connection after that. But i can see my question might be harder to answer than i thought. Guess there's no way around me having to visit him one day and see what i can find out my self. Anyway, thanks for your help every one!
Happy2Play 9780 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Just more info on what happens when this issue media is played. Possibly the server/ffmpeg log, playback method.
