Move Server from QNAP NAS TS-253Be to a new QNAP NAS TS-264-8G

I need some advice, help and perspective. At present I have the latest server version 4.8.10.0 running on a QNAP NAS TS-253Be which is a 2 bay NAS with an Intel x64 processor and I run it in Raid 1 (mirroring). All the libraries are on local drives and I have no problems with this setup plus, I am an Emby premium subscriber. However, a very old QNAP NAS of mine just died and I bought a new TS-264-8G which has 16TB drives and 8GB for memory as well as an Intel x64 processor..

Here is where I need help and advice. I wanted to move the Emby server and the libraries from the TS-253Be to the new TS-264. This new server I just want to use as my media server for my home theater. My intentions are copying the content of the libraries to the new TS-264 and then removing the largest content of the libraries from the old TS-253Be.

I just have a handful of remote users and I want to keep their accounts on the new TS-264 server.

1. How do I back up the details and configuration of the Emby server 4.8.10.0 from the old NAS and then reinstall the server on the new NAS?

2. Is this a valid approach for moving server and libraries to a new NAS and are there any pitfalls to avoid?

3. Any other suggestions or best practices and procedures for moving a server from one NAS to a different NAS?

4. Can I keep both servers running but move the largest content from the old server to the new one.

5. Can the Emby app on my Roku, Chromecast and PC display the content from two different servers?

This is a first one for me as the Emby server on the old TS-253Be is just humming and running fine and after the successful move, I just wanted to delete the major large content from the old server but I wanted to keep it running with small libraries as a back up and preserve the library structure. Main use of the old server will be for the in and out media transfers.

I really appreciate any help and advise as this community is precious in offering help.

Hi, have you taken a look at our backup guide?

Configuration Backup

If all the folder paths are going to be the same then this should be pretty seamless.

Thanks for directing me to where I should start. I plan to copy the entire directory MyEmbyMedia with all its sub-directories to the new NAS. I don't remember did the installation of the Emby server create the MyEmbyMedia or did I create it because it is a top level directory and I am not sure how to do that in Linux.

In addition can the Emby App display on the home page categories from two different servers?

The QNAP NAS arrived today the drives, which are more expensive than the NAS will arrive tomorrow, so thank you for helping out in a very timely fashion.

What a hassle trying to get the new NAS online. Of the two Seagate Ironwolf Pro 16TB drives one of them was DOA. At least 10 days before getting a replacement in with the holidays and the staff reduction and other profit increasing measures.

Finished today with the installation and cloning of my old Emby server to a new QNAP box. The instructions that are linked in Luke's post above are excellent and spot on. After some tweaking and hours of correcting actors images and meta data I am finally where I want to be.

The major reason it took this long where because of the Seagate drives. I ordered two 16TB Iron Wolf Pro drives directly from Seagate. I will NEVER do that again. of the two drives shipped 1 was DOA. It took 12 days to get a warranty replacement and that drive was ALSO DOA. Amazon to the rescue, same drive from the Seagate store arrived in 2 days. That one worked and finally the NAS was up and running.

Because Seagate futzed around so long with sending a replacement I had 1 day from the time I ordered to get a refund, that was 29 days from the time I ordered, sent it back, received the replacement and verified that everything works. I have 2 other NASes , two large Unraid servers all together 16 drives, but all either HGST or WDs and only needed to replace 1 in over 10 years. Seagate sucks in my opinion. But all is good if it ends well.
