AngelSing 49 Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 In the context of Emby, sharing content with other users can be a very useful tool for enjoying movies, series, or music together. With that in mind, could you explain how to share a link in Emby using this user feature? 1
harrv 90 Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 That's a great question. I can't figure it out either. I've turned on the option on my user account but can't find where to generate or copy those links. I looked in both the web app and the iOS app. I did find this blog entry from when the feature was introduced. Apparently something has changed since then.

As mentioned in the referenced announcement, that feature does not share actual media with anyone. is that what you were wanting to do?

But I can't find where to generate/copy the link to share that points to the static media info as shown in the blog post. Here is the image from the post. How do you open that share dialog? The dialog itself kind of obscures whatever it looks like or used to look like underneath, but I can't find any button, for example, that opens that dialog.
harrv 90 Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 Here is what I see for a movie. (I've clicked the ... option on the right so I can see all of the options.) And here is the setting that shows my user has permission to use the feature. It's not a critical feature for me. I was just wondering too once the OP asked. 2

What I am looking for is what @harrvsuggests: being able to share a link with some users that takes them to the desired movie on Emby. For example, sending the link of a movie that is on my Emby server to one of my users, so that when they open the link, the movie opens in their Emby application, whether on Android or Windows. Of course, this person must be logged into my Emby server beforehand. Edited December 12, 2024 by AngelSing 3
AngelSing 49 Posted April 25, 2025 Author Posted April 25, 2025 (edited) Hi @Luke I've been looking into the “Allow social media sharing” option in the user settings, but as discussed earlier in this thread, there doesn’t seem to be any visible way to generate the links that this feature supposedly enables. So my question is: Will this feature be removed in future versions, or is there any plan to bring it back and make it fully functional again? Personally, I would find it very useful to generate internal links to movies or shows within the same server. For example, when I come across a great movie in the library, I’d like to be able to share a link with a family member who’s also a user on the same server, and simply say: "Check out this movie, it's really good", without having to send screenshots or type out complicated titles. Ideally, the link would take them directly to the movie’s detail page inside Emby (as long as they’re logged in), allowing them to play it right away without having to search for it manually. I’d really appreciate it if you could clarify whether this feature is being removed or if there are plans to make it available again. Thanks for your time and for all the great work you’re doing with Emby. Edited April 25, 2025 by AngelSing
visproduction 315 Posted April 25, 2025 Posted April 25, 2025 In the meantime, you can just send a suggestion link from another movie database to tell your members that a new media is available. This site makes it pretty easy to create a link. They all follow an easy format. https://trakt.tv/movies/a-complete-unknown-2024

bdowns83 7 Posted April 25, 2025 Posted April 25, 2025 Agree w/ @AngelSing- would appreciate a way to send a link to family/friends when our new Yosemite photos (eg) are available. And being able to directly access w/o searching once in and/or navigating the library/folder.

If you want everything in Emby then just use the regular library functionality and add the photos there. If you need to limit who can view those photos then only give access to that library to those that you want to see the photos.

I do not know if I am overlooking something, but it is not about granting access or not. It is about the fact that if you are watching a movie in your library and want to share it with another user of the server, you simply send the link. The other person would only have to open the link sent through any social network and would automatically have the movie ready to play without needing to search for it in the library. It would be a very simple and fast way to share content with other users of the same server.
Luke 42077 Posted May 22, 2025 Posted May 22, 2025 The feature is currently disabled as there was significant negative feedback about it that having just a link was not useful. Also it puts an apikey on the query string providing access to everything that the sharing user can access, so I think we need to rework that before this comes back. 1

Is there any information on when this feature will return? I’ve truly been looking forward to it. Most of my users are older adults who constantly ask me for certain movies, and I have to explain over and over how to find them. If the link-sharing feature were available, I could simply send them the link through a social platform like WhatsApp, and by clicking it, they’d be taken directly to the movie on their mobile phone, using their configured Emby app. Any news on when it might be available again?

popy 71 Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 thx for the update on this. This is also a feature i am missing.
brothom 177 Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 (edited) In the webbrowser, just copying the URL does seem to give a unique link for each item, for example: Playlist: https://app.emby.media/#!/item?id=52740&serverId=REDACTED Collection: https://app.emby.media/#!/item?id=52738&serverId=REDACTED Movie: https://app.emby.media/#!/item?id=68071&serverId=REDACTED Checking the links as (another) logged in user that has access to the server and is logged in, does show the same item(s) so their combination seems to be unique for each server. Hi, if it's as you say, the problem is that it opens in the browser instead of in the app. We'll have to create a deep link or something similar so that it opens directly in the Android app.

Unless (and I don't know exactly how?) the Android app has the "automatically opens links of this type" feature much like Facebook, Youtube and the other platforms implemented. Maybe that's a cool Feature Request if one doesn't already exist. 1

Being able to share a simple link inside the server would make things so much easier than sending screenshots. Hope this feature comes back in future updates. 1
