[Feature Request] Support for passing subtitles to third-party players

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi, as we all know, Emby and Jellyfin's built-in exoplayer sucks, so we all want to use a third-party player, such as MX Player.(Download link is here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad)

But there's a problem with using third party players, it's not possible to load separate subtitle files.

But like the video shows, this problem was solved by Jellfin a few years ago, and Jellyfin can easily load external subtitles when using MX Player player.

But like the video shows, Emby doesn't support this feature so far, which is very disappointing.

But here's the surprise! There are currently some Emby modifications that support reading external subtitles when using MX Player, as shown in the video, this version of Emby does. (This mod version is called *Emby Terminus*, And download link is here: https://github.com/Terminus-Media/Terminus-client/releases/)

This is a really irritating point, since there are mods of Emby that support this Feature, it means that it's not a technical difficulty, it's just an oversight on your part, and it's obvious that this Feature is easy to do, Jellyfin does it, *Emby Terminus* does it.

So, please support this feature as soon as you can, it's really appreciated!😆

HI, the main issue is that there is no standardized way of passing the subtitles, so it would have to be developed separately for each player. Do you know how mx player expects it?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Regarding the issue you mentioned, I'm sorry, I don't know how mx player expects it.

But I can say that it doesn't matter that there is no standardized way of passing the subtitles, because MX Player is the de facto standard on Android right now, and as long as you have it adapted, then you're guaranteed a great experience for most of the people out there.

Jellyfin and *Emby Terminus* also only have MX Player adapted, and that's enough!

Hi.  We don't all know that.

What specific issue do you have with the built-in player?

Exoplayer is just a web player with basic functions

MX Player is the most powerful player on Android, with custom gestures and rich features. MX Player has stronger decoding capabilities and a shorter response time when dragging the progress bar.

MX Player is the first choice for local video playback. The poster wall of emby and the strongest local playback experience of MX Player will be perfect.

We want to maximize the experience, so Emby only provides posters and metadata, and the playback responsibility is left to the professional MX Player, which is reasonable.

As mentioned above, the built-in player of emby is slower and more rudimentary. Anyone who pursues a perfect experience will choose MX Player

HI, we'll look at adding this to the next update to Emby for Android. Thanks.

Can subtitle files be loaded when playing remote video?

  • This will depend on which protocols and networking tools are used. If subtitle file cannot be loaded, subtitle folder can be an alternative. Just select a folder as subtitle folder and copy all subtitle files onto that folder. After this is done, MX Player will read subtitle files from this folder in addition to the media library folder.
  • Subtitle folder can be selected on Settings > Subtitle > Subtitle Folder.

MX Player is dead after the buyout. Now it can't even be downloaded via Google Play.

NOVA Video Player is the new king for Android TV. If you could do a subtitle passing on it, it would be great.
