I just tried it that way too, and I realized that after restarting emby with that file edited, the server does not start.

What exactly did you do?

Shutdown Emby change system.xml, start Emby and Refresh metadata.

I turn off emby, edit the xml and emby no longer starts

Probably need to see the server log then.  Only guess may be permissions changed.

Once I restore the original xml, emby starts immediately, apparently it doesn't want me to edit it.

No, this generally just means the hand editing resulted in malformed xml. It's a good idea to run it through an xml validator before trying to start the server.

I think I understand that it tells me that the xml is correct, but the server still does not start. I hope you can give me some joy and incorporate it into the emby control panel in the next version.
