Chris0248 1 Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Dear Sir/Madam, With the update to DSM 7.2.2 i can no longer host my media server using DS Video. I have chosen Emby as my replacement but I’m confused on the device limits etc. I have 40+ users, but they don’t all require access from Mobile Apps (iOS and Android) most use Samsung TV but i few uses Amazon Fire Sticks. I am more than happy to buy Emby Premiere for my server but I’m a little concerned that not all my user base will be able to connect to the server. Am i limited to the number of users who can access my server? for instance. Samsung TV - unlimited Apple TV - unlimited iOS and Android/Amazon Fire Stick = 25 Your help and advice would be greatly received. Kind regards, Chris @ebr
Carlo 4560 Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Hi, It's not a user limit but an active Premiere device count. Premiere comes with 25 active Premiere devices included. You can also upgrade to 50 devices if needed. Check out our Knowledge Base article which should help you understand how this works. https://emby.media/support/articles/Premiere-Feature-Matrix.html?q=matrix Carlo

We of course wish you the best of luck and happy streaming! With that many users or devices, I'll suggest setting up a smallish test library and Live TV if applicable. Then test the different clients you're going to need support for your users. Test the ability to handle different 4K video formats, playback of AVC, HEVC, VC1 codecs and/or any other format you'll need support for. Spend time both recording and playback of Live TV channels if applicable as it's one of the hardest things to do and will combine TV, clients, transcoding in one shot. If your selected clients can play these back or can after transcoding then may have found a good fit that matches your needs. If not you've found out with many others find after spending way to much time loading libraries, configurations and getting things working for you, without testing features and client apps, your users are going to need. That's why I'd suggest testing these need to have items first, on any platform you evaluate. You may have other "must have" items as well,, so test them upfront as well. Carlo
Chris0248 1 Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 Hello Carlo, I have built a test platform (systems engineer for a job) and everything works a treat, remote access, reverse proxy all sorted. I don’t stream live TV to my friends just TV/Movies. I have a separate server that handles 4k but i don’t offer any transcoding as user devices can deal with that. Emby is best for what I need, but the licencing is a major issue, I just don’t get it. If I buy a premium licence for the server, I should be able to let whomever I choose to access it on what device they have. DS Video was free and had no restrictions at all, Emby was my first choice, and I really don’t like the look or feel of Jellyfin. Plex is a waste of anyone’s time/money. Cheers, Chris

Am i able to restrict user/device to premium account? how does the Emby server hand out premium access? Emby could actually meet my needs if i am able to control who gets premium access? @ebr Cheers, Chris
ebr 16169 Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Hi. There are a number of topics on this out here but the bottom line is that the device limits protect our business and help ensure Emby will continue to exist for you, the user. More information: Is there a limit to Emby Premiere? 1
Chris0248 1 Posted February 25, 2025 Author Posted February 25, 2025 Hello, Please can you help with a question. i have mutiple alerts on my dashboard that do NOT clear after a few days. In fact they go all the way back to when the server was created. Can you help?
Carlo 4560 Posted February 26, 2025 Posted February 26, 2025 Hi, It's a historical log, so they do not clear off the dashboard.
