I can't plug it directly to Sonos. My soundbar input is HDMI eARC only (Beam Gen 2)

Nvidia GPU can't output eARC. They output "everything" that's why I have an audio extractor.
I know that's a curious setup and my use case is peculiar to say the least.

Sonos does multi-room audio and home cinema setup.

Yeah, I understand your scenario. I've been through this a few hundred times. You'll need the AC3 encoder...

I just forced 5.1 on my audio extractor (you really go above and beyond, thanks again).

I tried with/without Atmos.
Auto/5.1/Stereo in emby client

The sound still output in stereo sorry (it was worth a shot).

Now try speaker setup and see whether you see 5.1

I still don't have the 5.1 option. Only stereo and Atmos.

I think the optical port is killing the deal. I think you'll need the AC3 encoder...

Does your Nvidia actually have a single output only? Can't you connect the HDMI output to the soundbar and the TV via Displayport/HDMI adapter?

Sorry, you explained it already

It's not an option at the moment, so it's pointless to repeat it in every 3rd post 😉

@Julien_NC - Now that we're already deep into everything - what's your soundbar model exactly?

Another thought. Have you tried connecting to port 6?

Port 6 cannot do uncompressed audio.

at least not for 7.1 - the manual is not quite clear

But the soundbar needs eARC anyway, so 6 doesn't work.

It's a sonos Beam Gen 2 : https://www.rtings.com/soundbar/reviews/sonos/beam-gen-2

I need to output my audio in eARC. My soundbar won't take any other input.

I can use a converter provide by Sonos (Optical to HDMI) but ATMOS won't work with it and I don't have an optical output in my computer (need an extra soundcard).

Word of advice : Don't buy a Sonos if you plane to use it with a computer especially a Windows one. Even the Wifi wont' work without using another software (http://www.tuneblade.com/ in my case but you can't output any good format with it).

I blame both Sonos and Nvidia. e-Arc should'nt be so hard to work with a computer considering it can already output audio (but what do i know)

AH, I missed that bit of info....

Well then, it looks like you're out of options. For the record, I don't like anything SONOS makes...

I don't wanna get destructive at the end - but all this effort for this plastic tube with one (really just one....crazy) tweeter and a bunch of inadequately sized speaker chassis?
No matter how often it's being labeled as if it would - this doesn't give anything like Atmos sound. Not even reasonable surroud sound.

-----------------------

Anyway, some more thoughts:

  • Have you actually removed and re-plugged all cables after switching to 5.1 on the gadget?
  • What was the reaeson for all this ? Your tv doesn't support eARC?
  • In the current setup - does your tv still receive audio when you turn up the volumne on the tv?

Well I had a full home theater before but I had to make compromise being in a couple and all.

Have you actually removed and re-plugged all cables after switching to 5.1 on the gadget? Yes I did restart it

I don't have a TV. I use a videoprojector who doesn't support e-arc.

Now I am just hoping than someday Sonos will support AAC, Nvidia will support e-arc or Emby will transcode AAC to another format.

Thanks for the support.

I meant the HDMI cables. Thats a difference. But I can't say whether it makes a difference.

Hi again. Plug and unplug didn't make a difference sorry.

Any way I can force transcoding in AAC to another format with a custom mpv file for example? What's the good practice/your recommandation ?

I am going to add two surround speakers anytime soon (main reason I am fighting with surrond sound).

Thanks,

Not in Emby. You'd need to use an external player.

Do you have any other computer/laptop with HDMI output (and no Atmos installed)?

Because I see it like this:

  • Your extractor device as a switch for 2.0, 5.1, 7.1
  • The only input is HDMI
  • It explicitly states support for uncompressed audio

When you set it to 5.1, and connect it to your PC, it doesn't make sense that Windows allows you to configure stereo only. In my setup, I can choose 5.1 even though the connected TV support stereo only.
My suspicion is still that the Dolby Atmos app might interfere with this, so that's what I'd look at.

Connect the extractor to another computer for once and also - if available - connect the PC to a TV with audio output (for testing - and if available)
