podonnell 47 Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 If I wanted to add to an existing library, but have it separated for access purposes, is that as simple as hitting this button: And adding the new location? Then I'm guessing I would see an additional checkbox here, under that same library? Another important question, can I have my sub-library as a child folder within the existing library, or is that going to pick all files up automatically and add to the primary library? ie - say that C:\Movies\ is current library I want to make C:\Movies\Private Would having C:\Movies\ be granted to users prevent me from limiting access to C:\Movies\Private ?
Solution pwhodges 2012 Posted November 26, 2024 Solution Posted November 26, 2024 Do not add C:\Movies\Private as well as C:\Movies - this is a common source of problems. You'd be better off having another folder C:\Private-Movies and adding that. You can then use the Access tab in each user's setup to restrict access to the Private-Movies folder per user. Paul 2

Paul Thanks - - I had surmised this may be an issue. My OCD wanted it to be set up within the same folder and not have to create a new private folder for each library I want to do this on, but if that is what prevents issues then I am all for it.

Doing it, the way you describe above, could result in database corruption. And you would in worst case, have to start over with a new database.

Then you'd add the two subdirectories, but not the enclosing directory. Of course, you'd be rescanning the whole lot because of the change in directory of the existing non-private movies. Paul 2

Paul My OCD would love that. Probably best case. Butttt I'm thinking all the rescanning would break a whole lot of other things, yeah? I was working on getting NFO files and artwork saved to every directory, but that's still underway -- so a bunch of metadata would likely get lost in the move.

What if you filter the content through tags? For example, you could create a tag in the private file called tag-Private-movie. Then, in each user's parental controls, you can block content that has that tag. You could even take it a step further by creating specific tags for each user, allowing for more personalized control. For instance: tag-Private-movie-juan, tag-Private-movie-pedro, and so on. This way, you would only need to configure the corresponding tag in each user's parental controls. This approach lets you manage exclusive content for each user while keeping everything centralized in the same library.

I very much wanted to do this, but couldn't find a way to really automate the process. I really loved the idea of tags being able to be used this way, but didn't want to have to look at each item individually. If I could tag automatically as they come into the library, that would be great.

If I could tag automatically as they come into the library, that would be great. Use the Bulky plugin to add metadata in bulk. With this plugin, you can select the movies you want and assign tags to them all at once. From now on, whenever you add a new title, you can assign the corresponding tags to restrict access for specific users. Alternatively, you can create a general blocking tag for all users and then manage exceptions as needed. Using specific names in the tags allows you to customize which content is hidden from one user while remaining visible to others. However, I don’t know of a method to automatically assign tags to content when it is added to the library. It would be a very useful feature. Edited November 26, 2024 by AngelSing
