douglashughey 2 Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 I am interested in ripping my 3D blu rays so I don't have to mess with the disc to watch on the one 3D TV I have. I've read through what information I could find, but I'm still stuck. What am I missing? I ripped a movie using MakeMKV, and I selected the extra MVC track. I did not re-encode from there for a smaller file size, as I wanted to start with a proof of concept. I followed Emby's naming conventions here: https://emby.media/support/articles/3D-Videos.html. Specifically, I added the MKV file alongside the 2D MKV file, and appended " - 3d.mvc to the file name (in this case, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) - 3d.mvc.mkv is the full file name), and I appended - 1080p to the 2D version's file name. I attempted to watch the movie using the Emby app on my Fire TV Stick Max on my 3D TV. I specifically selected the 3d.mvc video version from the dropdown in Emby before hitting play. The move played in 2D. What step am I missing? Thanks!

Luke 42077 Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 HI, generally speaking it depends on whether the device you're playing from supports it.
douglashughey 2 Posted November 19, 2024 Author Posted November 19, 2024 Thank you both for your feedback. So, as far as device support is concerned, I'm taking it that the Fire TV does not support 3D playback. If I were to connect a computer to the 3D-capable TV and launch Emby Theater from the computer, would that work in theory? What about the Nvidia Shield TV?

softworkz 5066 Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 What kind of 3D format are we talking about here? If it's left/right or top/bottom side-by-side, it will work of course in full-screen mode.
Guest Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 Pretty sure MVC isn't supported, but I'll have to confirm that later.

douglashughey 2 Posted November 25, 2024 Author Posted November 25, 2024 Thank you for the additional information. So if MVC is not supported in Emby Theater, then would there be a re-encode that I could do in Handbrake in order to make the movies viewable in 3D? Or, based on the research I've done, it looks like a (free?) program called BD3D2MK3D may allow me to convert to "Full-SBS, Full-T&B or Full-Frame Sequential 3D" from the original MKV with MVC. Are any of those viewable in 3D from within Emby? Thanks!
Luke 42077 Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 If you want to avoid re encoding you could also setup an external player for 3d.

Do you know other apps which are doing this? If you play for example a SBS video, the interface has also to be SBS, or else it will look strange, when switching the TV to 3D Mode (half of the interface on the left eye, other half on the right eye). Kodi has options to match the user interface to the playing 3D content and it also is possible to "activate" 3D mode on TV (playing in 3D mode over HDMI; but I had mixed results with it, sometimes it worked, sometimes not - on the same hardware). 1
douglashughey 2 Posted November 27, 2024 Author Posted November 27, 2024 After a little bit of research, I attempted Potplayer, with 3D settings I found somewhere online (and seem to have misplaced). On my 3D TV, it simply displayed two images side by side. I also tried encoding to SBS first using BD3D2MK3D, and again, the 3D TV displayed the images side by side, but this time, at half resolution. So, definitely no success yet. With that said, I realize that in 2024, 3D playback from a PC is a very niche case. I don't want to waste anyone's time on this, so I'll just stick with my old 3D blu ray player connected to my old 3D TV and be content with that. 1

For a few years, every TV had it, and at that time you wouldn't have to say much for getting us hot on the subject. That's probably also the time when the Kodi implementation has been done. But these days, without 3d displays and without 3d content being produced anymore, there's no more justification to put any effort into this for new development, unfortunately. Thanks for your understanding.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 The OSMC Vero is a device using a modified version of Kodi that has a reputation for having good MVC 3D support. If frame packed 3D is important to you and you are ok with using Kodi this might be an option for you.
douglashughey 2 Posted November 27, 2024 Author Posted November 27, 2024 Thanks Jdiesel for the suggestion. I remember OSMC from back when I was playing with Raspberry Pi media centers. I'm not really looking to put much money into the effort though when I've got a working 3D Blu Ray player already. And no worries, softworkz! You guys do an amazing job and have always been super responsive. I appreciate your efforts. Not sure if you guys want to deprecate this page though? https://emby.media/support/articles/3D-Videos.html
