CMJR23 8 Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Hi All, Just set up Emby on M4 Mac Mini and getting the above error when attempting to watch a movie. I have given Full Disk Access to Emby on the Mac but somehow I don't think that would make a difference as my Emby library is stored on a QNAP NAS. I was able to map the libraries to the QNAP NAS using an account on my NAS but unsure how to give permissions for Emby to access the shared folders. I also have Emby Premiere. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Neminem 1518 Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Devs would need logs, other wise it will be guess work.
CMJR23 8 Posted November 13, 2024 Author Posted November 13, 2024 @Neminemthanks for the reminder. Logs attached. Its definitely a permissions error as when I play the same movie that I copied to an external SSD attached to the Mac, it plays fine. ffmpeg-transcode-c61c3623-fd27-4ddf-b465-3324d8ae6a31_1.txt
CMJR23 8 Posted November 13, 2024 Author Posted November 13, 2024 (edited) I finally resolved this issue. It was due to some settings that I incorrectly configured in the Network section in Emby @LukeI also discovered an interesting issue which may be a bug due to a change in macOS Sequoia; If the Mac goes to sleep, Emby is not reachable either locally or remotely. I don't recall this being an issue on my previous M2 Mac Mini so it is likely due to a change in macOS Sequoia. Also, as a test, I attempted to direct play an 8K video I recorded on my phone. It took several mins before it started playing and the playback was not the smoothest which I kinda expected and I think that this is mainly due to the lack of hardware transcoding on Apple Silicon. My network is all wired and is 2.5Gbps but unfortunately, the Apple TV is limited to 1Gbps which also may be a factor. hardware_detection-63867138921.txt embyserver-63867138860.txt Edited November 13, 2024 by CMJR23

You may want to look at system network settings, to ensure the network connection is not put to sleep when the system sleeps.
CMJR23 8 Posted November 16, 2024 Author Posted November 16, 2024 Hi Luke, Just checked my network settings and I have Wake On LAN enabled. Since I enabled the prevent from sleeping when monitor is off, I have not had any issues. Is there a setting that I may have missed?
CMJR23 8 Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 Hi all, Just set up a Chromecast with Google TV for my Mum, however, it is unable to play any content that is streamed from my Mac Emby Server with the library that is hosted on an external SSD connected to the Mac. I know it's not the Emby Server as the same content plays fine on my Android phone (even over 5G) and my Apple TV 4K. I have Emby Premiere as well. What makes it more strange, after installing Emby Server and the same library on my QNAP NAS, the Chromecast with Google TV can play the same content fine. I have attached the log file don't see any obvious errors (unless I am needing new glasses). Also, when direct playing on my LG TV using the WebOS Emby app, I get "No compatible streams found" but the same content plays fine from the Emby Server hosted on the QNAP...go figure ffmpeg-transcode-531662ea-a0b5-4eb5-8b48-01cba722ab19_1.txt
CMJR23 8 Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 (edited) I spoke too soon I can now play movies fine when connected to my home WiFi but unable to remotely over 5G BUT....only from my Mac hosted Emby. Playing the same movie remotely from my NAS works fine. I have: 1. Port forwarded 8096 2. Enabled Remote Connections for the user and the server 3. Given Full Disk Access to Emby 4. Mounted the SMB Share on my Mac (mapping using smb://SERVER_IP/Emby Library/Movies/ in Emby) I can connect to my Emby Server over 5G on my Mac and view all libraries and movies, however, get the error when starting playback. Playing back from the test Emby Server on my NAS using the same movie over 5G no issues (using a different port of course). I have checked that port 8096 is Open so not quite sure what is blocking it on the Mac. Mac is running macOS 15.1.1. Needless to say, this is driving me nuts. embyserver (1).txt ffmpeg-transcode-ec2d8345-ac03-48d1-bc8b-63bc0391cb15_1.txt Edited December 1, 2024 by CMJR23
CMJR23 8 Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 Just tried using a custom port and that didn't make a difference either. Restarting my mesh router did not make a difference as well. This indicates that the issue is specific to the Mac
CMJR23 8 Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 (edited) Decided to install and test Plex remote access on my Mac. Plex works fine and is remotely accessible over 5G even while using my NAS to host it's movie library. This confirms that there is a setting or something in macOS Sequoia that is not quite compatible with the current version of Emby Server. My next test is to create a Windows 11 VM running ARM version of Windows 11 using Parallels Desktop to see if: a. Emby Server can run via the X86 emulation in Windows 11 ARM b. If I encounter the same issues with Remote Access Will update. Edited December 1, 2024 by CMJR23
Luke 42077 Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 Hi there, how did you install Emby Server exactly?
CMJR23 8 Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 Just tried using a custom port and that didn't make a difference either. Restarting my mesh router did not make a difference as well. This indicates that the issue is specific to the Mac @LukeHi Luke, I downloaded Emby and then placed it in the Applications folder before launching it for the first time. I can wipe and reset my Mac if this was incorrect as I have not copied much data on to it. Really keen on getting Emby to work remotely as Plex, while good, is a pain in the you know where when it comes to user management
CMJR23 8 Posted December 2, 2024 Author Posted December 2, 2024 @Luke Additional testing: Discovered the following: When playing content on my LG TV using the WebOS Emby client over WiFi - No Compatible Streams Available When playing the same content over a wired ethernet connection on my Apple TV 4K - Video plays fine but no audio When playing content using my Pixel 9 Pro over WiFi using the Android Emby client - everything plays as expected with video and audio When playing content using my iPhone 14 over WiFi using the iOS Emby client - video plays fine but no audio When playing content using my Pixel 9 Pro over 5G - No Compatible Streams Available When playing content using my iPhone 14 over 5G - No Compatible Streams Available When playing content using my Chromecast with Google TV over WiFi - Too Many Errors. Giving Up (that is the exact error message) Looking at the above issues\errors, I suspect that it has something to do with the encoders\decoders in the Emby Server on my M4 Pro Mac Mini but I am no expert.
Luke 42077 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Hi, please attach the corresponding emby server log as well. thanks.
CMJR23 8 Posted December 2, 2024 Author Posted December 2, 2024 Hi Luke, This issue is related the issue in this post as I discovered:
CMJR23 8 Posted December 2, 2024 Author Posted December 2, 2024 @LukeI don't recall having these issues when testing Emby Server (same version) on my M4 Mac Mini about 2 weeks ago so this may be specific to the M4 Pro chip, specifically to do with the video encoders\decoders maybe?
Luke 42077 Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 Quote Hi Luke, I downloaded Emby and then placed it in the Applications folder before launching it for the first time. Hi are you sure you dragged it into the applications folder? The error in your log is consistent with not doing that.

The error in your log is consistent with not doing that. Hi Luke, I downloaded and expanded the Emby Server zip in the Downloads folder before dragging the Emby Sever app to the Applications folder. Should I have expanded it in the Applications folder? I have decided to proceed with completely wiping my M4 Pro Mac Mini and re-installing everything. I will this time expand the Emby Server zip file in the Applications folder. Will test and update once done. Thanks for all your help Luke 1
CMJR23 8 Posted December 4, 2024 Author Posted December 4, 2024 @Luke I just completed rebuidling my M4 Pro Mac Mini from scratch and....EVERYTHING WORKS!!!! I can access content locally and remotely so far on my LG TV, Android phone, iPhone and iPad. My next test will be my Mum's Chromecast with Google TV - fingers crossed! You may be correct about how Emby server was installed although I could've sworn I expanded it first in the downloads folder, then dragging it to the Applications folder before launching it for the first time, although, I will admit that due to muscle memory, I may have inadvertently launched the Emby Server app whilst it was still in the Downloads folder without realising in my excitement to get it running on my M4 Pro Mac Mini. This time around, I made VERY sure to extract it from the ZIP file and then drag it to Applications before launching it. Now eagerly awaiting when Emby server will support hardware transcoding on Apple Silicon fully - thanks for all you help Luke. 1
CMJR23 8 Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 You're welcome Luke It even works perfectly on my Mum's Chromecast with Google TV! Out of curiosity, how far away is support for hardware transcoding on Apple Silicon? I may be tempted to become a lifetime Emby Premiere member once hardware transcoding is fully supported on Apple Silicon 1
