Kodi/Emby High Bitrate Issue

Hi,
I’m trying to use kodi as my movie player and trying Emby as my movie server to help organize and correct movie information. I’m trying to find a movie server program to handle my movie and tv show database only and let Kodi be the. Media player.

There are certain movies that play fine using the Emby add on and some that won’t. I think it’s movies that have higher bitrate of 55mbs or higher that keep buffering. It will play movie below 55mbs just fine.

After this happened I uninstalled the Emby addon and added the movies directly to Kodi database from my HDD on my network to see how it would play. And it played the same movies that constantly buffer with Emby without any issues. So I think the problem is somewhere in Emby.

Is there a way to fix this?

If I have to I’ll find a program that will compress the files and lower the bitrate without losing picture and audio quality. If anyone know of a program that can do this please let me know. This way I have a backup plan already in place if I can’t fix this Emby issue. This same issue also happens with Jellyfin.

Thanks!

Well, sounds a bit like a network issue. 55mbit is quite something especially if your box is connected via Wlan.

You could increase the buffer sizes on Kodi.

In Kodi 21 you can do that via Kodi "services" -> "caching" settings.

If this doesn't help, you could set up transcoding when using addon mode.

I’m not sure what it would be then. The same videos play fine when using Kodi by itself and pulling the movies directly from the HDD. But when I use Jellyfin it constantly buffers.

I have a 3.5hdd in a 4 bay DAS enclosure connected using a 10gbs USB C ports to a MiniPC with Intel n100. It is connected to a my router using 2.5gbs Ethernet ports on both ends. And I’m using the DuneHD Homatics Box connected to my router using 1gbs Ethernet ports.

directly from the HDD.

Hdd via network or directly attached to Kodi?

You can also try plugins's native mode

Kodi is on the Dune Homatics Box.

here is the order of network paths from my HDD to my TV

3.5” 16tb Seagate IronWolf Pro HDD (10gbs USB C connection) > MiniPC with Intel 100 (2.5gb Ethernet connection) > Router > DuneHD Homatics Box (this is where Kodi is installed) (1gb Ethernet connection) > 85” TCL QM851G

My router has one 2.5gb port and the rest are 1gb ports.
