2 Emby apps for Android TV?

Hi all, apologies if this has been asked somewhere already. So, i had the Emby Android TV install on an Android TV install on a raspberry pi, and faced some issues on log-in screen (basically the list of users was no longer presented, every time i had to type in user name + password). So i decided to remove the app and reinstall it, but in the process i realized they are 2 emby apps on the app store (see picture)

so i installed that time the app without the "Android TV" logo, and got the list of server users presented on the logon screen. I installed also the Emby Android TV app and got also the list of emby users presented.

Anyway, for now i just would like to know what is the difference between these 2, and which is the one recommended on Android TV (ok, i hear you: "well, the one with Android TV" 😉 but is it that simple??? the other one works great on my android tv too)

TV is the legacy app used for a TV device (running Android TV OS).  The other is the standard Android app, like you'd use on your phone or tablet.  Emby has been saying it will eventually drop the TV app and use the standard app for all Android platforms.

If you ever have a problem with the TV app, the first response is "please load the standard app and see if it works better".

Yes, use the one without the "Android TV" label. It seems to me to be the most stable and easiest to use of the two. I use it on both my Fire TV and my Shield TV and i see no problems. When I tried the other there seemed to be little glitches and hiccups in the interface and the playback seemed a little worse, although that may have been just expatiations because of the interface issues I saw.

It seems most ATV users prefer the ATV app.  Try them both and use the one you like.  I'm sure Luke would appreciate feedback.

ok thanks, now i understand better 🙂

I have the 2 apps now installed on my Shield TV (where i never had any issues with the legacy app) and also on the Android TV install i have on the Raspberry Pi 4.

We will see over time what the family prefers.  For me, i like the one without the Android TV marking; seems it has many more options and is indeed a copy of what I have on my phone and is very similar to the web interface i use occasionally. I just need to search in the settings to see if there is an option to present the logon screen to choose in between the different users (that have logged in once at least) each time the app is started

Currently there's no way to have the user select screen shown upon startup. It remains an open item (#56) on the list in the Mega Thread

However, it's pretty quick and easy to switch between already logged in users via the Sidebar (left slide out), or top Profile icon

Make sure your users aren't HIDDEN from the login screen, which may be why you have to enter the username each time.

If not, then log in the users you want and switching users is very simple in both apps.

I recently learned that if you need closed captioning support, use the older Emby for Android version.  The newer version, while it works well, doesn't do closed captioning.  There are actually several switches to turn it on in the app, but none of them actually work.  The older Emby for Android does closed captioning fine so I hope they don't remove that version until the fix the lack of closed captioning in the new version.

What do you mean by "older" ?

There are two apps:

- Emby for Android

- Emby for Android TV

Which one are you referring to?
