Hangs when live selecting TV channel on Shield from Win MB server

Not sure whether this should go in windows forum or shield.  Please move if necessary.

I recently installed Emby server on a NUC which plays live TV fine on iOS devices, in a web browser and NextPVR directly.  Im having issues with getting my Shield to play channels as a client.  It takes a LONG long time to display anything.  The Emby for Android app is slightly quicker but stutters during playback.

I'm trying to watch Freeview channels in the UK using the emby guide data.  Some channel broadcasts take longer than others to display. - regularly up to 45 seconds!  It also seems to be different depending on what programme is being aired.  The football match would do it every time, but on the same channel later it would load more quickly when a different show was on.  Very frustrating.   On first install i was fairly confident with its performance but something odd has happened.

I've spent pretty much all of today troubleshooting with no luck.  I have tried sideloading the Emby app, trying the Beta MB server, reinstalling the original stable version of the server, doing a factory reset on the shield,  and reinstalling NextPVR.  All drivers have been updated on the NUC.  Nothing has made a difference.

Hopefully I have attached the right logs.  If I need to supply anything else please let me know.

I really hope you can help.  I thought the Shield was capable of playing most things, but I've really struggled with this after hoping it would be the ideal setup.

Hi,

What settings do you have configured on the ShieldTV's Emby app in the LiveTV menu?

There is no Live TV setting in the app I wish to use on the shield (emby for android v3.4.23), Only “Playback”. Looking at my original post I think I started this incorrectly - it is the Emby Android TV app v2.1.21 which is slightly quicker.

If you switch to the other app on shield, has does this work for Live TV?

Hi Carlo. Thanks for your response. Yes the other app works as far as tuning goes but is still slow (not as slow). Unfortunately I get frequent buffering when playing using that app.

I’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of now and have reluctantly moved back to Plex despite the limitations on multiple channels over 1 MUX.

A shame, as I really liked the Emby features and wanted it to work but it doesn’t pass the wife test.

In the version built for the shield there are options in the app for Live TV that can make quite a bit of difference as it will allow direct play vs transcoding.

Take a look at the options in the ShieldTV app for Live TV.

Thanks for the suggestion, Carlo. I experimented with pretty much every permutation of those settings and gave up after little success.

Maybe I’ll revisit Emby further down the line as a side project when I have the time.

Thanks again for your time and suggestions.

Hey @Luke

Sorry, but I cancelled premiere and uninstalled everything Emby related now.

I was looking on the Emby forums and saw a lengthy thread regarding UK freeview, its broadcast formats and how it causes issues. I didn’t see anything close to a resolution and it was acknowledged that there is a lack of UK based SQEP to investigate.

Like I say, I really liked Emby, the look and feel, the customisation etc but it appears it just isn’t up to the job for UK DVBT ….yet!

I’ll probably have another look in the new year when I have more time.

Thanks again.
