Teredactle 37 Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 Hello, I'm trying to set up the plugin for email notifications, but this doesn't seem to work with Google, Hotmail, or Yahoo smtp servers. Would someone please chime in that has this working with any of the above? TY!
darkassassin07 652 Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 (edited) This week I had to change my config across several self-hosted services to use gmail, as hotmail/outlook no longer supports basic single-factor password auth for smtp use. Gmail requires you to generate an application password for smtp use. Host: smtp.gmail.com For TLS, use port 587. https://support.google.com/a/answer/176600?hl=en https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en It does work though. /edit: seems Microsoft also has an app password system, I just couldn't find it at the time and already had a working gmail config so I just used that. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/how-to-get-and-use-app-passwords-5896ed9b-4263-e681-128a-a6f2979a7944 Edited October 9, 2024 by darkassassin07
Teredactle 37 Posted October 10, 2024 Author Posted October 10, 2024 (edited) So I found out this info about the app passwords, I had forgotten that this was the case, and got it working after posting here. Maybe a question for @Luke, can I add more than one email addresses in this field? There is no info on the syntax, and would like to add 2 emails here. Cheers, and thanks for responding! So I've tested in the email plugin that email is working, get the test notification. I've set up notifications for one user, for New Media Report, user the following services "email notifications", I added some media to a few libraries, but I didn't get any notifications. Aside from these two things configured, is there another thing that one has to have set up for this to work? Essentially I want my extended family remote to be notified when I add new family photos/videos to the libraries, but am testing this locally first to ensure it works, but it's not working. Carlo 4560 Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 Hi, You can use the notification feature to send web webhooks to external services like Zapier which allows you to create all kinds of workflows such as what you're trying to do plus so much more. Zapier is just one of the many services that allow you to setup custom workflows based on a webhook event. Carlo
Neminem 1518 Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 (edited) I stead of adding "outsiders" to the mix, just setup the same notification, just to another receiver. But i could be nice is it could be " ; " divided like in common email clients Or better bcc cc and the like and " ; " separated Guess this has turned into a FR Edited October 10, 2024 by Neminem Adding
Teredactle 37 Posted October 10, 2024 Author Posted October 10, 2024 (edited) So I have one user login set up to be the remote family user login (and it's used in several places by several different family members), as I don't need to have multiple user to duplicate the same libraries allowed, etc, etc...it's just easier management. So the notification I want to trigger is "new media has been added" only for this user, but I want to send to more than one email - what I'm asking is that email field, does it allow more than one email, and if so what is the syntax? Would be nice if this was documented in the plugin. Can someone let me know? In any case "new media report" notification is not working, nothing is sent out... ok so my bad, I was using "new media report" instead of "new content added"... duh. So that's sorted! Would still like to understand what is "new media report" though - is that when a user UPLOADS stuff to emby? Just would like to know about the multiple emails if that's possible, would rather keep it simple than going webhooks route, etc... Edited October 10, 2024 by Teredactle added info

Hi, you could setup the notification multiple times in the notifications section.

I'm not really sure what that means. I don't see any place where I can add or remove notifications.... Could you please tell me what does the notification for "new media report" is, and when does this notification get sent? - I don't find any documentation that explains this. TY
darkassassin07 652 Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 (edited) User icon > app settings > notifications. You can add 'email' multiple times to this list with different settings for each one. The 'new media report' is a list of every piece of media that's been added to the server since this notification was last triggered. It's triggered by a scheduled task you can configure. Carlo 4560 Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 For example, if you wanted to notify 4 people, you would set of 4 notification jobs.

Painkiller88 248 Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 (edited) ah, what a mess when i read this. Please work with a distribution list, add the people who should get the notifications and add the mail of your distribution list into emby. If emby can't handle multiple addresses with a semicolon use a distribution list. when i read, add the notification multiple times, i get a headache. Almost every mail service can work with distribution lists/groups. I think this would be way more effective than adding the notifications 4x or more Edited October 11, 2024 by Painkiller8818 1

The 'new media report' is a list of every piece of media that's been added to the server since this notification was last triggered. It's triggered by a scheduled task you can configure. So I don't have the option to add notifications; I am on server 4.6.7 portable, which works fine for me and I haven't seen any reason to update whatsoever (feature wise). My notifications screen looks like this, no option to ADD notifications: I also don't have this "New Media Notification" option. I'm guessing that some of this stuff has changed in more recent upgrades to the server... The emails sent are from the emails plugin - @Lukecan you please advise if one can add several emails in the Email Plugin, in the Email To field? >>So there is "NEW MEDIA REPORT" (under Playback Reporting category) and "NEW CONTENT ADDED" (under System category). I'm not sure what "NEW MEDIA REPORT" will provide in an email notification and would like to understand this. Since it's under the Playback Category, what would it actually provide in terms of the notification, what new media has been played back? For "NEW CONTENT ADDED" I see that an email is sent when something new is added to the user's libraries - it's not a "total for the day" but rather immediate for each piece of media, so if you add 3 videos you get 3 emails. Is this notification dependent on the library settings (i.e. detect new additions, or scan ever xxx hours, etc)? Or is this notification behaviour locked as such you will get an email notification for every single piece of media added? Can you only have this notification only for selected libraries?? All in all, really I just want to be able to send my family (well mostly my dad) an email notification when I've added new photos or videos to the libraries of photos/videos of my kids, so that he knows there is new content there. It's as simple as that.
Neminem 1518 Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 (edited) @TeredactleNotifications was updated with 4.8.0.0 "Rework Notifications to be an option that each user can configure, rather than server settings" You are like 3 years behind and you don't think its worth updating I suggest you read through all change logs. Before doing you much needed update. If I where you I would do a step by step update, to see how it goes. Edited October 11, 2024 by Neminem 1
Teredactle 37 Posted October 11, 2024 Author Posted October 11, 2024 There are too many changes, it's really impossible to look through it all. The system works fine for me and this is why I haven't upgraded. From what I've read there are really no security updates that would affect me, I use it locally and only share it remotely with my family via IP whitelist. The danger is minimal at best. For me the only things that are of importance are: Transcoding (local/remote) improvements (and I'd want to understand and quantity that (not just "transcoding improved'), compatibility improvements (older clients, mostly remote, from smart TV like LG etc), and ease of login via web/mobile/smart devices. The rest of the stuff, visually, TV recording, etc makes little difference. **Now the only thing I want to change (and I would consider upgrading) is to automate a notification to my family that: 1) new media has been added, but in particular for SPECIFIC selected libraries from those shared (so not from all libraries shared with a user), 2) and just have this sent once a day with a summary , not an email sent for every piece of media added to said libraries Does the new version allow for this sort of granular/customer notification? >>>>For the record, the Email To field allows emails separated by commas, like this: email, email2, email3 (although I just tried 2 emails).

The notifications are immediate when the events occur, but when there are numerous ones in a short period of time they will get rolled into one message.
Teredactle 37 Posted October 15, 2024 Author Posted October 15, 2024 Thanks Luke, So for #1 looks like what I'm after is here in these 2 spots: and here and #2 I will have to test out and see. >so far I've seen some major layout changes (checking via web browser) to latest version from what I'm running 4.6.7, one thing I noticed is that the ESC key isn't mapped to the back key any longer; is that removed now? Thanks!

Teredactle 37 Posted October 17, 2024 Author Posted October 17, 2024 in a browser (chrome) when going through folders, etc

Teredactle 37 Posted October 17, 2024 Author Posted October 17, 2024 You're right, not sure why it wasn't working - I just updated my 4.6.7 to the latest, but not before taking a snapshot 1
Teredactle 37 Posted October 18, 2024 Author Posted October 18, 2024 So I've update to the latest version, in particular for the updated notifications, and in particular the customization where it can kick off "new media" notifications only on user selected particular libraries. So far I haven't seen these notifications sent in a group mode, or grouped together - I will run a test tomorrow if I have a chance. @Lukeis there any way to add the library to which the "new media" is added in the notification? TY
Teredactle 37 Posted October 22, 2024 Author Posted October 22, 2024 (edited) So far so good on the new version. Really liking the speed as well as the notification options. It would be great, to have in the notification, the library for which the notification is sent. Feature request? i.e. New media added "bla blah bla.jpg to HomeMediaPhotos" something to that effect. Thanks! What does this do actually do, the Grouping? Because when I add media, let's say I add 10 photos and 3 videos (copy them to the library folder) I have 13 different emails that media has been added, one for each piece of media. This implies it will group them (assumable into 1 notification?) but what are the details of how that works - sorry I am unable to find details on this to see if it's working as expected. Feature Request? Would it be possible to just have one email sent out nightly, with ALL the additions to the libraries/library changes (and combine that with the previous request so that it shows which libraries the media has been added to?) Are either of these possibilities @Luke TY Edited October 22, 2024 by Teredactle
