BobLovesEmby 0 Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 Hi all, (I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum) I'm connected to the EMBY server via a devent VPN. The Emby server is connected to Gigabit internet. Speedtests from the router are 850mbit/s down. 300 mbit/s up. Currently via that VPN tunnel I average 90mb down, 56 mbit up (via speedtest.net). I created some different versions from some home movies because I thought the 4K playback was slow. I followed the multi-version movies and the versions I created are below. However, the load time has not improved. A 13.5mb file takes the same amount of time to load as a 300MB file. Is this solely due to the ping/latency of the VPN tunnel? (I don't have the option to connect to the server via NAT). Since DSM gives me the same values, that could be the case 2160p 4x3 - 301MB: DSM: 9.08 sec Emby: 11.06 sec 1080 16x9 - 161.2MB: DSM: 09.46 sec Emby: 10.38 sec 720p 4x3 - 39MB: DSM: 10.26 sec Emby: 10.73 sec 720p 16x9 - 39MB: DSM: 09.73 sec Emby: 10.06 sec 480p 4x3 - 18.8MB: DSM: 12.46 sec Emby: 9.56 sec 360p 16x9 - 12.5MB: DSM: 10.31 sec Emby: 10.11 sec
Happy2Play 9780 Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 And testing without the VPN? But sound like that is the issue as you have tested two different methods with same/similar results.

Got a link? I couldn't find anything related to this with a Google search. 17 hours ago, BobLovesEmby said: I created some different versions from some home movies because I thought the 4K playback was slow. When playing back these different versions of your media, are they direct playing or transcoding? 17 hours ago, BobLovesEmby said: I'm connected to the EMBY server via a devent VPN. Don't forget to test the client bandwidth speed as well. Does this VPN service give you a static IP and port that you have forward to Emby server allowing you to use the VPN's public IP address? If this is what you're doing, there will be more latency as you now have a server in the middle of all traffic coming and going between the client and the server. This also seemed to drastically reduce your available bandwidth by a factor of 6 or move. If possible, try different servers you connect to via VPN as one server may be much faster and have less latency even if it's not the closest VPN server to you. Typically, closer is better but not always. If remote access to your Emby server is only for your use of your families and you are only needing to access Emby via phone, tablet, computer you may want to try both Tailscale and ZeroTier. These are overlay networks that only use an intermediate server to setup the connection between the server and client to work around CG-NAT but all traffic is direct. This should be much faster in your case if it fits your needs. They both work similar but do things differently, so I'd test both to see which you like better. You should be able to use the free tier on either of them for just family. Carlo
