axelsl 19 Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 Hello! I apologize if that has already been raised but I could not find it. The TV guide on the Emby Roku app (at least on my 2 TVs) does not support the following scripts: Japanese Korean Thai Arabic Hebrew probably more, but those are the ones I could test For those, it replaces the characters by blank spaces. (see attachment for examples) No problem for Latin of course, Cyrillic and Greek. Is it a limitation of the Roku system or something that could be solved in the Emby Roku app? If it cannot be solved, could the system just display the name of the channel in case the name of the TV show contains invalid characters - the same way it does when there is no guide data? Thanks

speechles 2055 Posted October 6, 2024 Posted October 6, 2024 (edited) Apologies, it isn't us. It is more complicated than Roku doesn't support the font. With Arabic and some other languages they are rendered right to left. The Roku does not understand the concept of flipping the display to account for left->right or right->left display. This means we would have to write custom code to reverse strings and reverse elements on screen to do so. But it is difficult to do this because Roku also imposes a rather strict limit on the size of the deployed application. It cannot exceed 4MB in size once zipped. The fonts are usually compressed themselves and they exceed this size. It becomes impossible to package these languages into the zip because of this limitation. This goes for both CJK and NOTO fonts. So while we could possibly get the layout to understand right->left and look perfect as it does left->right we cannot import the fonts required to render those languages. It is very unlikely Roku will ever include this support(adding CJK and NOTO fonts) in their firmware. Doubt they will ever allow 25MB zips for packaged applications either. But...If they ever do we will certainly add support at that time. https://community.roku.com/t5/Roku-Developer-Program/Arabic-subtitle-just-shows-squares-on-TV/td-p/510386 https://community.roku.com/t5/Roku-Developer-Program/Right-to-left-RTL-Languages-Support/td-p/481075 The above are some of the limitations we are presently faced with.
