OLD FAMILY VIDEOS (WONT PLAY and SOME UPSIDE DOWN)

Hello Emby this is an ongoing issue - I'm running Emby Server 4.8.9.0 and running EMBY APP on SAMSUNG TV

PROBLEM 1 - I have a lot of old honeymoon videos that are 576i MPEG2VIDEO Codec and they dont play natively when I select them on my Samsung TV Emby App.  To play them I need to run the IOS Emby APP and then CHROMECAST them to my TV and they play.  This seems a round-about way to do this and wanted to be able to play them directly but they dont play.  Is there a setting on my Emby Server that can set this to "transcode" for me so I dont need to CHROMECAST them?

PROBLEM 2 - Many of my videos play upside down.  I posted a topic here a few months ago and although I got about 20 replies - the issue is still a problem.  @Lukeposted the last answer and I posted back that I am on Server 4.8.9.0 - This issue is also driving me crazy as it's not all videos and the thumbnail is correct and then I play it on my IOS device thought the all it plays perfectly - it's just when I play it on the Samsung TV EMBY all that the videos are upside down.

I would LOVE for these two issues to be fixed so we can enjoy our family videos.

Thank you

@RobnaeyaertHi,

If you have or could make a small sample file that plays upside down, that could be helpful to the devs to test with.

Thanks,
Carlo

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

@LukePlease find attached my Server Logs.  At 9:38PM I attempted to play 2 videos - (1) Was a honeymoon video that will not play as I think it is an old MPG format - the audio play but the video does not. I'm playing this on my EMBY Samsung TV.  However when I play it on my IOS phone from the same server using the EMBY IOS APP the video plays (it's like it's transcoding it or something).

My second issue is my other video (newer video of my pizza oven) plays UPSIDE DOWN when played on the Emby Samsung TV but then again when I stream it to my EMBY IOS app it plays the correct way up.

I've been posting and posting and posting about this issue on another thread and no-one was able to help me.  Can someone please help me it's driving me nuts.  I would have hoped EMBY would be able to play home video collections a WHOLE LOT better than this to be honest.

Thanks all - cheers Rob

Thanks @LukeAlso not a criticism at all as I love EMBY but for family videos etc I find it odd that I'm having so many issues so I'm thinking it might be something I'm not doing correctly so would love some advice as these videos are our treasure.  Having recent movie from my iphone play upside down seems really odd on the Samsung TV app yet on my IOS Emby they play perfect.  I'm wondering if there is some transcoding going on?  I'd love to get this all sorted.

I await your feedback - thank you all

If you play those files directly on a PC, do they play correctly (right-side up?)

Anyway, as someone who has been dealing with random videos from random people for a very long time (one of my jobs is being a mobile DJ, and I am often asked to play videos for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, reunions, etc. etc.) is that they're often not encoded properly or in a format that is very common and almost universally supported - which means that your results can vary - a LOT! Some videos will be completely unplayable on most hardware, and some will "sort of" work but not well, or do weird things, like playing upside down.

As such, I regularly correct these videos by re-encoding them. To do this, I use VidCoder (a free software based on Handbrake), and I typically encode older files, which can use all kinds of crazy formats and CODECs, into .MP4 files using the H.264 (AVC) codec, which is very easy to do with VidCoder.

https://vidcoder.net/

And there are options to flip your videos, so if you had some weird video camera that didn't set the orientation flags correctly, or someone clicked the wrong setting when editing the video, you can easily fix this and make a video that will play easily and correctly on any modern hardware without having to just cross your fingers and hope. If you're running an Emby server, having your media files in common, widely-supported formats and codecs will greatly reduce the problems your viewers will have watching videos from their various different devices - and there's a whole lot of 'em out there and each one has different levels of support, but they almost all support the really common formats & codecs. There are, of course, other options besides VidCoder to do this, but none that I've tried are as easy or as reliable - at least for me. It's certainly worth giving it a try, and it won't change your existing files - it will just create a new version.

You may also want to install MediaInfo so that you can find detailed information about your original files. For example, knowing the bitrate that your original file was encoded at gives you a good starting point to select the bitrate for your re-encoded video.

Thanks for the very long reply

(1) yes the videos play perfectly on the Emby server directly (from the win 11 PC running my Emby server

(2) then why does my Emby IPhone app play the video through the app correctly (streaming it) and my Samsung Emby app plays it upside down?  Also streaming it

makes no sense

Any ideas @Lukewithout having to recode all my videos?

Hi,

The player on Windows is different than the player used on iOS. Most likely Apple's player doesn't interpret the metadata in the stream the same way. The windows player probably sees some metadata that gives it a clue to flip the video during playback and iOS checks a specific setting which isn't correctly set to invert the video on playback.

The rotation issue is one that we are looking into. Regarding the old family videos that won't play, can you provide a sample video for testing? Thanks.

Here is an example of the old honeymoon files that wont play on my Emby Samsung App but WILL play on my Emby IOS app from the same source.

I'm assuming my Emby IOS (apple) app is somehow transcoding this file to play it correctly.

It is MPEG2VIDEO format and taken in 2008.  I have a lot of these files so I'm hoping for a solution that will save me converting them (as I mentioned, they stream perfectly to my IOS Emby App).

The videos that play upside down were recently taken on my iPhone and uploaded to my Emby server.  They too play perfectly on my IOS Emby app the correct way up - but on my Emby Samsung App they play upside down.

Super frustrating - hoping for an easy fix please @Luke

Thank you. @SamES

What happens when you try and play these on Samsung TV? Do they play with audio, but just a black screen?

@SamESNo they throw up an error (black Screen).  I would have assumed my LOG files would have shown that?  They play perfectly when streaming to any other device (IOS phone etc).  I've said that a million times.

@Lukecan I please ask for some resolution here? It's been a long time asking and I have paid my support etc.  It's an issue I want to sort please.

What it’s the error? Client errors don’t always make it to the server log

The screen goes black and I get a "playback error" notice top right of screen.  This only happens on my Samsung TV Emby app and only for older format videos.

Is there a simple setting I can flick to make my TV EMBY "transcode" or translate the video for playing older videos.

My other issue (upside down video) is stil not addressed either and they are much newer files from my current iphone

If you wait on the black screen, can you here any audio?  Does the OSD progress move like it is playing?  I'm pretty sure I know why this is occurring, but need to confirm.  If you can hear any audio with the black screen, then I know the cause.
