Best OS and hardware (integrated graphics vs GPU) for performance

Hello all,

The family uses Emby viewed through client Rokus at home and through a VPN to the kids at college.

I have tried multiple Windows hardware setups and was recently frustrated with a GTX 1660 and went back to Quick Sync (now on an I5 8500).

I was hoping to get some experience on the speed stability of an OS change?  Would moving the linux improve the delay and also the replay I get of the first 15 seconds of live TV?

Also what is the thinking on the best in video encoding in Sept 24.  I expected NVENC to improve things but it was a waste of time.

Thanks in advance

Hey admin thanks for dumping this in a category where nobody will respond.  In an empty forum it is important to have things properly organized!

This was also a question about which OS does Emby better so putting it this category hardware really doesn't fit.

Intel iGPU is the better option. It's more efficient and as capable as gaming GPUs. Memory is the limiting factor with discrete GPUs so you have to go big to match a current gen Intel iGPU in a reasonably sized machine.

No. The OS isn't causing or contributing to this so it's the same between Windows and Linux. Go with the platform you're most comfortable using and be aware that Linux lags behind Windows in supporting the newest Intel CPUs/iGPUs in the market.

There is no best one. The answer is what's best for you and your users. If you're concerned with Live TV performance then the best and optimal is direct stream. Anything added to the pipeline to change the stream adds overhead and delays. If rate limited and converting is absolutely needed then the better options are those which can be converted the fastest. For all other media that isn't time/latency sensitive the way Live TV is, then it doesn't matter as much.

It's relevant in here too.

Thank you for the response Q-Droid.  Appreciate it.

Live TV is the problem as the resources required for it are far more than just doing a movie.
