Version 4.8.9 on Windows 10 cannot be installed over 4.8.8

I have a Windows 10 Media Server.  I am currently running 4.8.8.0.  I get the notice that 4.8.9 is installed and it shows a little box that says Update Now.

After clicking that button, it says that the server installation is complete and to restart.  When I do that, I am back to 4.8.8 and the process starts all over again.

I've been in this loop for at least 10 times.  I've tried restarting the server.  Nothing works.  It's just that I am stuck on 4.8.8.

Hi ,try shutting down emby server and then installing 4.8.9 from the website on top of your existing version. Please see if that helps.

Will that erase the settings?  I just want to be certain before I try that.

Hi, no it won't.

Thanks.  That worked, but not until I killed a rogue ffmpeg process that was running in the background.

I noticed that sometimes when a user gets to the end of the movie, it will still show up as playing even though it is at the end.  So I forced it to stop.

Also I tried to kill the Download TV Theme Songs pug-in that was running forever.

That didn't seem to work either, so I restarted the Emby server and those 2 issues went away.

Then I tried the update from the web browser and it failed.

Then when I did your suggestion, it also failed because it said it couldn't move files to the backup folder.  I then noticed there was an ffmpeg process running.  I killed that and the install completed.

Thanks.

FWIW I also have this issue (since yesterday evening). I'll try the external reinstallation later, but this is probably an issue for everyone with this setup? Unless it has already been fixed somehow.

Common issue as have seen a browser keep Emby from updating do to something maintaining hold of the Emby /system folder.

I stopped Emby and installed from the new setup program that I downloaded.  No dice.  I may boot the machine tomorrow and try again after stopping Emby.

I had moved my install directory over to C:\Programs from the user's AppData/roaming.  Once I install the new one which seems to always go into AppData/roaming, I was able to copy over the system directory to the real install location and startup the new version in C:\Programs.

I assume I'll always have to update the main Emby system this way if I'm located in C:\Programs.

Only if you are trying to update via the installer.  Emby should autoupdate wherever it is located.

If you are manually updating you get the Portable zipped system folder, rename current system folder and extract new system folder.  As system.old is always the previous version unless you update multiple times and it can be the same version.

But have not test that location and could be the issue with auto update.  Emby chose appdata so updating would not fail.  But per the portable you can place it wherever you like.  Installer is limited to Users Appdata.

Or you should be able to dump the download zip file in updates folder not postitive if needing to be rename to "embyserver-win-x64-{version}".

I went to pull the portable but it says it's still 4.8.8.0, not the latest 4.8.9.0.

Your info is great for me for future updates.  I'm not sure why it wouldn't update in place under C:\Programs.  I rebooted to get rid of any lingering FFMPEG instances, then tried the normal Emby update via the internal restart but it still wouldn't update itself.  I've seen this a few times over the years ... I'm sure everyone has at one time or another.

I'm good to go on 4.8.9.0 now via my method, but will use your "portable" install method next time.
