BahusPL 1 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 (edited) Hi. I need to build a new server for EMBY. I wonder what will be better. RTX 2080Ti with more memory or Intel Arc, or maybe RTX 3070Ti or 1080Ti or maybe Radeon cards like 16GB 7600XT. On average, about 6 users use it. The system is running on Windows 11. I was also thinking about a 12700K processor, unless AMD is better. I care about temperatures and silence, as well as some supplies for the future. Advise me what to choose. Budget is around $800. So what is it about and what does Quick Sync offer? Edited September 18, 2024 by BahusPL GPU add 7600XT
TMCsw 246 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 (edited) @BahusPLFirst Welcome here! Now for the bad news… …almost all of the graphics cards you have listed pretty much blow your budget on there own… and up your power bill NOW The Good news… Don't consider them for a while,(intel QuickSync is very good) Look at intel Gen 12 CPU’s with UHD 7xx, (avoid Gen 13/14+ as of this writing (search it)) The i5-12500 w/UHD 770 looks reasonably priced and performs great! But a cheaper maybe? i3-12xxx w/UHD 730 should work fine for you requirements for future a few/many years from now you may consider adding a separate GPU for newer codecs (BUT your bottleneck will is still IO (=input/output == nvme/ram/disk)) Edited September 18, 2024 by TMCsw
BahusPL 1 Posted September 18, 2024 Author Posted September 18, 2024 (edited) I want to buy a second-hand card. I'm currently eyeing a 3070Ti for around $300. There remains the issue of the processor and the motherboard. What differences will there be if I put 12700K together with an RTX 3070Ti instead of, say, 12500? Ultimately, I plan to run Parsec sometimes and play while away, which is why I'm aiming for such strong graphics. I'm looking for a golden mean. I haven't written yet that I already have a server but I want to rebuild it. Currently it has i5 3570 + Radeon 5450 + 10GB 1333Mhz + PSU 650W + 1SSD + 6HDD. I also have an internal SATA AXAGON 6x6G controller on PCI-E Edited September 18, 2024 by BahusPL Add controler

You can likely use the PSU 650W + 1SSD + 6HDD + SATA AXAGON 6x6G and the case that holds them. Yes the 12700K will preform better than the 12500 but will cost $more$ 19 hours ago, BahusPL said: I'm looking for a golden mean. Note: most games will dominate the HW, meaning streaming will come to a crawl if it works at all. Thought you were looking for a budget emby server not a gaming rig... ..I'm done here...
BahusPL 1 Posted September 19, 2024 Author Posted September 19, 2024 Thank you very much for your help. Finally, the server took its final shape. Emby, in accordance with the transcoding recommendation, will be at 12700K, which will probably translate into lower electricity bills. However, from time to time I will want to play, that's why I managed to get an RTX 3070Ti. We'll see how this combo works in streaming 1080p gameplay through Sunshine and supporting several EMBY users at the same time. I believe in him. 1
TMCsw 246 Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 I’m also curious to if your new/future setup can sustain (multiple) transcoding(s) and game playing simultaneously? So please report back after you have tried. So many people say your emby server should not be used for anything but emby , I say that’s ridiculous as I have a whole lot of other stuff running on my servers and emby works fine (even on a Raspberry pi4). But as I’m said I’m just curious as I’ve never tried gaming on my servers (I’m not a gamer)...

I used to have my main desktop as my server in the past and I had no issues gaming and encoding at the same time. At the time I used my then 1080Ti for transcoding.
