DarkStar1977 119 Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 Hi, I noticed that Genre Cleaner is not working properly. Those are the genres I've in Movies: This is the mapping I have in Genre Cleaner: As you can see there's not Rule yet for "Biográfica" (Biopic in Spanish). Let's create one to modify Biográfica to Biopic: As you can see, seems there's no "Biográfica" Movies to be mapped to Biopic .... but, those movies exist: So seems that Genre Cleaner is not reading properly Genres anymore. Can someone (the developer) take a look at this ? thanks in advance.

GrimReaper 4739 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 I'd guess we're not on the same page here: - OP has genre Biografica in his library (visible from the screenshot) - However, he cannot map Biopic to that genre as it is not listed in plugin dropdown - How would Refresh Metadata solve that? At best, genre Biografica would remain unchanged - at the worst, it'd be replaced with some other, depending if full refresh and/or field locked; - Question is why genre Biografica isn't already listed in plugin dropdown?

Because it hasn't been added with that "+" button at the top of the page. The first time you bring up Genre Cleaner settings, it will scan your library and bring in all the genres that exist. But it only does this once. If you wish to map a new genre, you just create that genre with the + button and then map (I have to admit I'm working on very old knowledge here but I'm pretty sure that is still the process). @softworkz? 1
GrimReaper 4739 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Yeah, haven't checked it myself in quite some time, but if understood correctly, OP should actually create 2 genres by "+": Biografica and Biopic, and then map latter to former?
DarkStar1977 119 Posted September 18, 2024 Author Posted September 18, 2024 Hi Folks, In principle, when you do a library scan from the plugin, the plugin reads all genres available and add them to the list if I remember correctly from the first time I did it. Once the plugin has discovered all genres, you can map one to the other. Has no sense to have to create all them manually and then remap it. Am I wrong ?

You don't have to create them all but the point of the plug-in is to narrow down your genres to just a handful. So you should only be dealing with that handful.

I can only explain the new (yet unreleased) cleaner plugin. I had looked at the current one only once during development of the new one but I don't remember the UI logic. But what I do know - and what never made sense to me - is that the current plugin scans all genres you have just once, and among all those, you can do the mappings you like, but that's kind of like once and forever. You can manually add mappings for additional genres at any time later, but you never get to know about any genres that you don't have in your mappings, because the plugin removes all unknown (non-mapped) genres before you ever get to see them.

The plug-in was designed back when tmdb put a ton of trash (tags and keywords) into the genre field and this was a way to limit your genres to just a few that you cared about. tmdb no longer does that so the utility of this plug-in is really quite limited at this point IMO. If you wish to allow a new genre after the initial scan, you must add it with that "+" button I mentioned. 1
softworkz 5066 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 One use case that is still relevant for example is to unify your genres when you get them in different languages depending on the source of information. Or to merge genres with typographical differences (depending on the source of information). Some well-known genres also go under multiple terms, so you can merge those into a single term. You can also use it to change a genre to an entirely different name. Also, you can monitor new genre terms that aren't covered yet and take approproate actions on them. That's about the new plugin, most of these things aren't possible with the current one, which was clearly focused on a very specifc use case - like @ebr explained.

When I retrieve metadata for a movie (TV Show, etc), It's a question of being lucky, the info can come in Spanish, English or even other languages like italian, french or hebrew, depending on where the movie come from. That's why this plugin to work properly it's important. And this means not limiting it to the initial scan and then do everything manually ... The "Classification Mapper" plugin for Parental Ages is a great example of how this one should work, specially on the classification Count, that reads the real age for every movie:

That's just not what that plug-in was designed for. It had a very specific and limited purpose when it was created. As SW alluded to, we have an upcoming plug-in that will probably be more suited to what you wish to accomplish.

Then I will appreciate if you can mention me on this post when this new plugin is released, and let's cross the fingers that does not need "Refresh Internet Channels" to work ....
